Protein bars... How many of you eat them? If you do what flavors and brands? Also what have you heard the down side can be. I dont currently eat them but have been thinking about trying some for extra protien. I have heard to be careful because of the sugars and carbs.

I eat protein bars 2-3 times per WEEK. I tend to use them on days when I get to mid-afternoon and my protein grams are low for the day. I also keep one in my purse or car when I'm running errands on the weekend; that helps me stay away from bad food choices like fast food. I'll also use them sometimes if I workout after work and have errands to run before I go home for dinner. I use the Power Crunch Bars, which are about 185 calories, 9 g. carbs and 14 g. protein. I've also used the Quaker Q-Smart Bars (120 calories, 9 g. carbs, 10 g. protein) and South Beach Diet High Protein Cereal Bars (140 calories, 15 g. carbs [3 g. fiber, 3 g. sugar alcohol], 10 g. of protein). I tend to prefer flavors that include chocolate and peanut butter, but that's just a personal preference. I like these bars because they don't have that funny aftertaste that comes with other protein bars I've tried. I'm basically following my dietician's guidelines when it comes to protein bars. She did warn me to be careful about how much sugar they have and to watch the calories. Hope that's helpful! Kellie

Jenn- I really haven't done the protein bar thing. I haven't found any that have lower carbs and taste good. I really don't want to put the carbs in yet. My dr. said to not introduce carbs or fruit until I reach my goal weight. He said he sees people stall if they do this. So, since I stalled this last week, I'm saying no to carbs! I'm trying to stick with the basics, eggs, cheese, chicken, etc. I did buy some protein pudding and it's pretty good. 20 grams of protein and only 1 carb. Mary

Jen, I eat them as a snack. I only do 1/2 one. My nutritionist would rather have me get my protein from food than bars. The best bars are by carb solutions they have 2 net carbs, 20g, protein, o trans fat, 1 sugar, and 22 sugar alcohols,. this is for the fudge almond brownie. The blueberry is great, as is the strawberry one, I had the cookie dough today. the peanut butter is incredible too. I bought them at my local drug store and when I was at the gas station the otehr day before work they had them there so I bought one and fell in love with the strawberry. I will eat one if i'm out and don't have time to eat real food. Hope this helps. Lisa J. in Mass

I like the Atkins bars, but you really have to taste different ones. I like them because they only have one gram of sugar (11 grams of protein). My favorite is the caramel chocolate brownie or the caramel nougat. I use them a few times a week as a quick snack on the go! I keep one in my bag for "emergencies".
