Daily weigh-ins may be good for you

I'm quoting this from the March issue of Shape magazine. "Get on your scale today and again tomorrow. Sure, the idea may sound as appealing as a standing date with the dentist, but a new study from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis found that daily weigh-ins may be the key to shedding pounds. Women who followed that strategy lost twice as much weight of the course of two years - dropping two body mass index units - than those who stepped on the scale weekly. Avoiding checks entirely was linked to weight gain. The findings are counter to the advice of many weight-loss programs, which often suggest that the daily up and down can be demoralizing. But for many women, lead author Jennifer A. Linde, Ph.D., says that doesn't have to be the case. "The number is a feedback tool," she says. "Unless you have had an eating disorder or severe depression, knowing where you stand every day can be very helpful. You can spot an upward trend so that you can make adjustments to your plan quickly." For consistency, weigh in at the same time every day and think big picture. "Expect fluctuations of 1-3 pounds daily," Linde says. "If the numbers go up more that that and stay elevated for a week, it's a sign to reevaluate your diet." That sounds good to me. I always feel so guilty about weighing every day. Now I don't have to. Marcia

I've always weighed myself daily since surgery, not for vanity reasons [well maybe at first lol] but it keeps me in check. It helps me to decide what kind of day I can have, for instance I'm on a slight stall now so I'll reign it back a *****ange of few things and up my protein, so I definitly think it helps. I just read the same article on Monday while sitting in a waiting room and I wanted to say "I told you so" I weigh every morning and that is it. But I felt guilty at times for doing that. It made me feel so much better. At one time my husband took the scales away. Jane

I DO TOO, MS JANE ... IT KEEPS ME "HONEST" SO IF I DO GOOF UP, I DON'T CONTINUE TO GOOF UP FOR DAYS & WEEKS ON END. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE HIT A MAJOR STALL/SLOW DOWN ... BY WEIGHING DAILY, I'VE NEVER REGAINED ANY WEIGHT ... WHICH, WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE CASE BEFORE SURGERY ... & WHEN I WOULD REGAIN, WELL THEN THE DIET EFFORT WAS SHOT, YA KNOW! NOT SO NOW! SO, I WEIGH DAILY & IT WORKS FOR ME. GOD BLESS YOU DAWN & NICK
