Low thyroid?

I saw my doctor today for my 4 month check up (a week late because they had to postpone me) and he was looking over my labs and he said my thyroid is too low? Anyone else have that problem post op? I thought that was weird! Lord knows no one ever told me that BEFORE surgery cuz I kept wishing I'd had a low thyroid to blame my weight on. I'm guessing this must have been brought on by the surgery. Anyway they are sending me to an endocrinologist to have more tests done... yadda yadda. He also told me that I need to supplement my Iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin D, because they were all low, so he gave me a list of dosages to take, etc. My B's were perfect though. Glad something is! OH and I have to see a NUT because I'm still not eating enough solid food and he "didn't want me to depend on protein shakes for the rest of my life or become malnourished"... I knew that one too, but I told him I kinda thought me not having an appetite and being replused by all food (except chocolate ) was only temporary. Anyway, he said maybe the NUT could help me find foods that appeal so that I can start getting more SOLID food in me... I'll try anything! But I'm down 80 lbs and I still have almost 70 to go so I am not letting anyone stuff me with food just yet!!!

Hi Vi, I' sure everything will be fine and you'll get all the things you need to bring your levels up to par. I have thyroid disease but got it a few years back and have been taking medication since I was diagnosed. I know what you mean about the food. It just doesn't appeal to me anymore. I get no pleasure from eating. I also get extremely bored with what I'm eating. I know this will all change as I get further out...or at least that's what everyone says. I was a real junk food eater before surgery and I am praying and preparing myself for when the cravings return. I have not allowed myself to eat any of the trigger foods I couldn't deal with before surgery. I've stuck to the menu the nut. gave me and haven't strayed. I'm scared to. I really want this to work for me...it's the last hope for me. I'm half way to goal at 75 pounds down and have 75 to go. It's hard to believe sometimes. I never thought I'd lose weight again. This is really a miracle and blessing. Hang in there. Everything will be fine. I guess we'll have to keep up with these checks for the rest of our lives...but, it's worth it. How are things going with your friend? Have you been able to work any issues out? Hope I'm not being nosy. Fran

I know what you mean, this is hard for me to believe too. I still wake up amazed that I'm losing because I thought for sure I was going to die a 350 lb (or more) woman!! As for my friend, we've worked out a lot of issues and I am SOOOO hoping that Cali trip will happen in May, but we'll see what happens. Thanks for asking and you are definitely not being nosey!! Hugs, Vi

I wish I was repulsed by food. I can eat just about anything I want and I don't dump. For me, after being able to eat solid food, it's hard to go back to just liquid protein shakes and water. I've been trying to do that but I get so hungry. I'm losing slowly. I finally made it to 65lbs and that was probably because I was sick last week so I couldn't eat. I feel like if I don't eat something thats hearty,it's just not filling. My husband always keeps that slow cooker full with chicken, veggies and potatoes for the kids and although the chicken and veggies are good for me, the potatoes aren't. (but they call out to me) Seriously though, if a person is faithfully only eating all protein and water where are they getting their energy from? I find myself feeling sluggish alot.....................Shana

Maybe you are low on iron or some of your other vitamins? Have they done your labs? I'm low on iron, but suprisingly enough, I've not had the energy loss (yet). Vi

Vi, I am hypothyroid also...I have been for almost 7 years now. I used to take synthroid but now i take levothyroxine.....no difference between them. I went undiagnosed for at least 3 years and thats when i gained most of my extra weight.....so i can blame most of my gain on underactive thyroid. BUT, once they got it in check the weight never came off and no matter how i tried I couldnt make it come off. So theres my story. lol Now thats its normal now my energy is vastly improved and so is my memory...it got really bad for a while. How this helps! Missy

Hi Missy, thanks for the information! I never had any symptoms, so I guess it's related to the surgery! Vi

Hey Violet, this is the other Violet. I had surgery on October 19,2005 and you wished me all the best back then. I too have thyroid issues. My thyroid is overactive and has been messed up since surgery. My doctor had to up my synthoid after my labs. Hopefully we can get it right soon. Congrats on your weight loss so far, it seems you have been doing very well. My loss has been slow (at least I think it is). But still, 63 pounds is 63 pounds less than before. Best of luck, Gail ( first name is Violet)

Hello OTHER Violet Been a long time, good to hear from you! I don't think your loss is slow at all! I know we all want it gone yesterday, believe me, but it's going to come home in due time! Keep in touch! Vi
