Wow you are so right: we are all so fortunate to benefit from the miracle of weight loss surgery, I hope that none of us finds ourselves in the terrible situation your father has been in. To go undiagnosed simply due to the excess body tissue in the way, and to think that he might not have survived, is horrifying.
I have to say, one of my greatest motivators for going ahead with WLS, was the death of my favorite aunt from complications of diabetes, about 3 years ago. I was diagnosed with diabetes in June of this year, and I kept thinking I didn't want to end up like her: in a wheelchair, half of one leg missing, the other foot with ulcers, failing kidneys, unable to go to the toilet alone because she couldn't reach her behind with toilet tissue, due to all the excess body fat and fluids in her system. If only WLS had been prevalent when she was my age, her life might have been very different.
