weight training

Well I was right. The PT today gave me a whole list of nautalis machines to do weight training on, plus she wants me to start doing sit ups. SIT UPS???? I can get maybe like an inch off the ground, but that's about it. I have to do the weight training 2-4 times per week. If I do it 2x, I have to do all the exercises. If I do it 4x, I get to alternate arms and legs, so I can shorten the workout. She wants me to start out very light because of my back problems, so I will start out 10 lbs on arms, and 30 lbs on legs and 1 set of 30 on each machine the first time out, working up to 3 reps of 30 on each machine. I'm supposed to increase the weight as I feel comfortable, but if my back starts hurting to stop immediately. The good news is that now that I'm swimming 1 mile/day, that counts as an aerobic workout, so I don't have to walk on the evil treadmill anymore if I don't want to. She says I don't have to use the bike either. Just the water aerobics class, 1 mile lap swim, sit ups, and weight training. She said I'm doing really well, and that 90% of the people she sees at 6 weeks post op have lost between 30-40 lbs, so I'm right where I'm supposed to be. I see her again at 6 months, when she told me she will add even more exercises. Evil evil torturous lady. Sheryl the sit-up queen (NOT) 292/255/1??

Sheryl... I am not allowed to do anything but aerobics/cardio for the first year....I would love to do eventually get back into that as I used to do it when I went to the YMCA...I will be glad when the doc releases me to swim...I guess I can't because I had open rny... I can't imagine doing sit ups rite now...they sound utterly painful....did you have lap or open? Jenn

I had mine done lap, and I healed really quickly. I was released back to water exercise 12 days out. They make everyone start doing some form of weight training at 6 weeks. If they can't do the gym machines, then they do resistance bands. The center I go to pushes hard for both physical exercise and recreational activities. They make us keep logs for everything we do and everywhere we go and everything we eat. Part of the program is agreeing to see a PT, a RT, a shrink, and a dietician for a whole year. I spend what little free time I have logging stuff. Pretty soon I'm going to have to start logging my logging. Sheryl 292/255/1??

Beware! The nautalis machines kicked my @ss! They don't start at 10 lbs at my gym, so I had to do 30 lbs on all the machines. The trainer had me start with only 6-10 reps on each machine to see how sore I'm going to be. Some of them were easy, but some were sooo hard. My triceps were killing me afterwards. And my stomach. And my inner thighs. Well, pretty much everything hurt for a few hours. I'm just a tiny bit sore now. Okay....maybe medium soreness. I would rather eat dirt than spend more than 5 minutes on an elliptical trainer. Those things are impossible. I want a Tony Little Gazelle. They look like so much fun in the infomercials. Good luck with the trainer. Let me know how it goes. Sheryl 292/254/1??
