BOCA
Hi Misty,
I have tried Boca Burgers and Morningstar Farms meatless products and have had no trouble with them since I started eating solid foods two weeks ago. I ate half of a Griller (burger) and it filled me up. Just make sure that you don't get ones that have sauce on them like BBQ sauce - there's a lot of sugar in that and it might make you dump.

Hi Misty,
I'm a vegetarian (making this very hard somedays!), so I have been doing a lot of fake meat. I had a morningstar spicy bean burger yesterday with a slice of fat free cheese melted on top. I did pick out the bits of whole corn. I ate about 3/4 of it before getting full - I chewed very carefully since it does have some whole beans in it. It was pretty tasty (although quite cold by the time I took my last bite - is that annoying anyone else?). If you are looking for other meat-free options, Tofurkey has a new-ish line of fake luncheon meats - some aren't so hot, but the turkey is quite good. I had a slice heated up on Thanksgiving!
I did buy some other boca/morningstar products to put in my freezer pre-op, but some of them aren't nutritionally worth it now. I love the morningstar bacon, but 2 slices has 4.5g of fat (no too terrible), but only 2g of protein. The patties seem to be the best nutrition wise.

Brenda..
I am not a vegetarian but I was at Whole Foods the other day and saw a whole line of the Tofurkey type products...I almost bought some but then thought what if I don't like it and since there is only me it would be a big waste...
Do you cook/use tofu in anything? I am looking for some recipes with tofu..excellent protein...my roomie is from China but he is so busy I never get a chance to ask him...

Hi again,
Actually, the Tofurkey I like best is the sausages. When my parents would barbeque, I would have them cook me one. I haven't tried one since surgery, since they are pretty dense, and I probably couldn't eat half of one. I can't remember the brand, but I bought some fake meatballs in the refridgerated section - not frozen - and ate about 3. I used a few spoonfuls of 98% FF cream of celery soup to moisten them a bit - very good.
As for tofu, for someone who lived in Japan for 8 years I should have more of an idea how to cook it! A few days ago, I got some egg drop soup at a Chinese place and asked them to add tofu to it. It was great and went down easy - also had good protein with the eggs and tofu! I have a WLS cookbook that has a recipe for tofu tikka that I want to try. It's mostly just tofu and Indian style seasoning, which is good for me since I am not allowed veggies for another month. If you can eat them, a stir fry with low-sodium soy sauce, veggies and tofu pieces would be good - maybe even with a dash of sesame oil. Of course, in my imagination, there would be a big bowl of rice to go with it - one Japanese habit I am finding hard to break, but have not eaten it yet!
