My husband got fired from his job on Friday and now we have no health insurance, i'm po'd. I don't know if my post-op visits will still be covered as the company had his benefits terminated effective Friday as well. I can't get insurance as I just started a temp-job last Wednesday. I don't know what to do about all my sugery followups. Does anyone know of any insurance that will cover the uninsured. I don't want to have to apply for MASSHEALTH(WELFARE). I know that sometime in the near future we will have insurance again. At least I'm grateful that I had my surgery before the insurance terminated. The worst thing about it is that the firing came right before the holidays, which stinks. I'm so upset. Anyway if I don't post the rest of the week. Hope you all in some way have a great Thanksgiving. Lisa J

Gosh, I'm so sorry to hear that. I know how you feel. My husband got fired the week before my surgery (the 2nd one) but he found a job last week and will be back to work next week, thank God. Fortunately I'm the one holding the health insurace. By the way, I work for my medical insurance and I can tell you that your post op visits are covered for the next 3 months because the doctor gets paid a "case rate" for your surgery whi*****ludes all your follow-up care for the next 90 days. And you know that you can apply for COBRA too if you need to keep the insurance right? I know it's not cheap, but it's an option. Don't worry (easier said than done). Everything will work out. I remember a time when he got fired before the holidays. I know it's hard, but you will be OK. I was scared to death and we made it through fine. HUGS, Vi

Lisa, Sorry about your insurance but if your insurance works like mine most your post op visits for the first year should be included in the cost of surgery. Also I don't think they can leagally cut you insurance for a process you are going through at the present time but that i'm not sure it would be worth checking up on. Good Luck Marcey 255/233/150

Thanks Vi, I work as a Medical Biller. Cobra will cost over $1,000.00 for the 2 of us. I may have to take out insurance from the temp company or I can possibly see about what other insurance companies may ahve to offer. Thanks for all your great support. Lisa

Yeah I knew the COBRA would be expensive. I remember it was going to cost us between $1900 and $2000 to cover the family and I was so depressed thinking we couldn't even afford our mortgage and bills, how would we pay that. Good luck hon!

Lisa, check with the Financial Aid office at your hospital. If your surgeon has a hospital affiliation (I think he does), that might be a possible answer. I've been denied by MassHealth every year (I have to apply every year) because my disability payment (I'm also fully disabled) exceeds their cut-off point. So, I would guess that isn't a good answer for you, either. I went the hospital Financial Aid route, and it worked for me. Most major hospitals in this area have a good program. Best of luck to you!
