Amt of Calories include Protein Drinks?

I have a question...I am going to be asking it to my nutritionist in two weeks, but I don't want to wait that long for the answer, so I am hoping one of you know. Most of the time I hear people say that they are eating around 400-500 calories a day. Is that counting their protein drinks? Cause I am only eating 2 oz of protein at each meal, and then only 1 oz of either a veggie, starch or fruit at each meal, so only 3 oz of food at each meal (as according to the nutritionists guideines). I am eating around 300-400 calories a day. BUT then my protein drink is (as according to the nutritionists guidelines) 4 cups of 1% milk (110 cals a cup) and 2 scoops of Whey protein powder which has 110 calories a scoop. This means with the 4 cups of milk and powder my drinks total 660 calories!!! That means I'm taking in over 1,000 calories a day! Am I figuring this wrong? Can anybody help me with this? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks! Cindy

Hey there Cindy, This probably isn't the answer to your question that you want but you are probably figuring everything correctly. Nevertheless, if your nutritionist tells you to do this, do it! Every doctor and nutritionist is different. I've noticed many people are on protein drinks whereas my nutritionist tells us to avoid them and get our protein through our food. I also am to focus on protein grams and not so much calories. Just to keep fat to >25 gms/day and carbs to >100 gms/day and sugar >3 gms/serving. If I follow these guidelines, the calories are going to be okay. After all, prior to surgery, did you every only eat 1000 calories in a day? I know I didn't! As long as you are feeling good and loosing weight, you're doing great. The nutritionist will probably adjust as you go, but for now, you probably need the extra stuff for healing and so you don't go into starvation mode and your body start shutting down. You're doing wonderful! Don't compare yourself too much to others as everyone's journey is different. Later, Nancy

Nancy, Thanks for responding to my post. I only need to be on protein drinks for the first six weeks, so I only have two more weeks on them, but for the last week I hadn't lost any weight and I was thinking it is because of the calories in the protein drink. Thanks!!! Cindy

Hi Cindy, I've been getting anywhere from 600 - 850 calories a day and I count everything. I don't do a lot of protein drinks, maybe one a day or one every other day. I track my intake on www.fitday.com. It's a big help! How do you fit in 4 cups of milk a day? That's 32 oz of milk! I make my shake with 4 oz of milk, sometimes 8 oz and 1/2 a banana and the powder but can only manage to drink half of it! A 32 oz shake would take me all day to drink.

Hi Violet! I only need to be on my protein drinks for two more weeks, that will be my six week point. Yes, it takes me all day to get in all that milk....4 cups. We are to drink 32 oz a day of our protein drink, then after the six weeks they want us to at least drink 24 oz of 1 % milk a day to help with our calcium for the rest of our lives. Yes, I use fitday also...it's great! Thanks so much for your help! Cindy

Do you make all 32 oz at once or do you make them 4 times a day? I read somewhere that you should mix the protein shakes and drink them right away because the protein starts to break down after a while? Have you ever heard that? I need to research! I guess it's kind of like the same reason why they used to tell us with the babies that if the formula sat out for more than an hour or two we had to throw it out?

Violet, I make it in a 32 oz pitcher and keep it in the refrigerator and just fill my 8 oz sippy cup 4 times each day. I will be soooo glad when I don't have to do this. But I thank the Lord that it at least tastes good and is not a yukky tasting drink. Thanks! Cindy
