Not hungry or full
I expected to not feel hungry for a while, and I haven't since surgery (17 days ago), but I did expect to feel full after I eat. I don't feel full either. I started soft foods today and my hubby made me 2 scrambled eggs, even though I only wanted one (what's that about?). Anyway, I divided the plate in half and slowly ate the one egg, it took 30 min. I didn't feel any different than I had before I ate. I was curious if I would have been able to eat the other egg too. Would I ever start to feel full? Is my pouch too big? I have been able to get in all my liquids since a few days post op. I have never had any trouble getting all my protein. Maybe the doc did give me a bigger pouch??? To me, it doesn't matter if I eat or not. I eat to get nutrition right now, but I don't feel hungry or full at all. How are you guys feeling?
Marcia
Marcia,
It could be worse. I don't seem to get full either, but I get hungry a lot. And I know it's not "head hunger" because my stomach growls. I know I've overeaten a few times since surgery. When we go out to restaurants, I have to separate what I'll let myself eat before I touch anything, or else I know I'd eat too much. I'm measuring everything I eat at home, but sometimes will sneak in a extra piece of string cheese or bite of tuna or something (but I always write it down). The Nut thinks I'm hungry because I'm working out 2-3 hours 4x/week. Well I don't want to stop working out (well...yes I do...but I won't) and I should stick with my 3oz 3x daily meals with no snack. I asked to do 2oz 4 or 5 times/day and was told no.
As for the liquid...I accidentally chugged water the other day (I just forgot for a moment I for I was post RNY) and was totally fine. I can drink a 20 oz bottle of water in 15-30 minutes. I burp every time I drink, no matter how slowly I sip, but that is the only 'problem' I have with liquids.
It terrifies me that I'm still getting hungry and not getting full. I had 8 oz for dinner tonight (instead of the 3 like I'm supposed to). Granted I only had 681 calories for the day, but it's still taking more food than it should to feel 'not hungry'. I'm just trying to keep my food choices to things high in protein, low in fat and carbs. Tonight I had double the meat and peas, but only 1 oz of rice.
To be honest, the whole thing is driving me a little nutty. I wish I had a crystal ball and I could just see if this whole thing is going to work or not.

I'M THE SAME WAY, MS MARCIA. I'M NEVER HUNGRY; I'M NEVER FULL. CLEAR FLUIDS SEEM TO RUN RIGHT THROUGH ME & NOT SIT IN MY POUCH.
ACTUALLY, I'D BE THRILLED IF I NEVER GET MY APPETITE BACK. I CAN EAT & ENJOY THE FLAVOR NOW ... & NOT HAVE ANY DESIRE TO OVEREAT. I EAT PER AMOUNT NOW ... I WEIGH & MEASURE EVERYTHING.
MY SURGEON MADE MY POUCH EXTRA SMALL. WHERE MOST POUCHES ARE THE SIZE OF A SMALL EGG, MINE IS ONLY ABOUT 1/3 THAT SIZE.
I DID HAVE 1 MAJOR PROBLEM ... I TRIED LIVERWURST. I THOUGHT LIVERWURST WAS 100% MEAT, JUST IN A SPREAD TEXTURE. I ATE A LITTLE ... WAITED ... ATE A LITTLE MORE ... WAITED ... THEN FINISHED MY PORTION. NO PROBLEM UNTIL ABOUT 45 MINUTES TO AN HOUR LATER WHEN I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA DIE!!!! NO NAUSEA OR VOMITING ... JUST FELT SO FULL, I THOUGHT MY POUCH WOULD POP (EVEN THOUGH I ATE THE "RIGHT" AMOUNT).
I CHECKED MY BOOK THAT GIVES THE BREAKDOWN OF FOODS & FOUND OUT THAT LIVERWURST HAS 12 CARBS IN IT- I'M ON A NO/LOW CARB DIET ... LIKE A 2nd STAGE ATKINS, SO MY SUGAR SPIKED & SLAMMED DOWN & I ALMOST PASSED OUT FROM THE EXTREMES ... TO BED I WENT & IT TOOK ABOUT 12 HOURS BEFORE MY SUGAR & MY POUCH WERE SOMEWHAT BACK TO NORMAL.
LESSON LEARNED ... I CHECK MY FOOD BREAKDOWN BOOK BEFORE I EAT ANYTHING ... EVEN IF I "THINK" I KNOW WHAT IT'S MADE OF. MY "STOMACH" HAS BEEN TEMPERAMENTAL ALL WEEKEND SINCE THAT EPISODE.
I ACTUALLY WISH I COULD HAVE WELL, THAT WAS MY MAJOR GOOF OF THE WEEKEND!
GOD BLESS YOU DAWN & NICK
I KNOW, MS VI ... IT WAS REALLY AN UNPLEASANT SHOCK TO ME; I'VE BEEN MISERABLE GETTING PAST IT ... MY 1st YUCKY WLS EXPERIENCE ... ALL BECAUSE OF A LITTLE LIVERWURST!!!!!!!
BTW, IS THE DOCTOR IN, MS VI? ... I NEED DR VI!!!!!!!! DO YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW IF WLS PATIENTS CAN TAKE MAALOX QUICK-DESOLVING TABLETS? EVER SINCE THE LIVERWURST TURNED MY POUCH INTO THE "ODIOUS GROUCH POUCH", I HAVE HAD REFLUX SO BAD THAT MY THROAT IS SCALDED. IT FEELS LIKE THE BACK OF MY THROAT IS ACTUALLY PEELING FROM BEING "BURNED". PEPCID IS NOT HANDLING IT ... HELPPPPPPPPPPPPP!
GOD BLESS YOU DAWN & NICK
I don't really feel full or hungry either, so I measure what I eat, but sometimes I lose the desire to finish eating. I do tend to get that feeling up in my chest that they said could indicate fullness -- sort of like "heartburn".
This came from my surgeon's web site and might help:
http://www.obesity-surgery-associates.com/dietingtechniques.htm
" Recognizing Fullness
Indications of fullness may not feel the same as before surgery. Some signs that your pouch is nearly full may be a feeling of pressure or fullness in the center of your abdomen, just below your rib cage, or feelings of nausea, regurgitation or heartburn. Remember, stop eating as soon as you are full; over-eating even one ounce can make you vomit and can lead to stretching your pouch."
Hi Marcia, I too am never hungry but I still can't get much more than 3oz in at a time. I am on soft now, 4weeks out. Meat is terrible. Chicken I thought was the worst until I tried a small piece of grilled cod. I craved the fish and couldn't wait. Took one bite waited 5 min. Took second bite and up it came. That has been the only time I have vomitted. I'm still eating alot of soup. It taste great and fills me up. I warm sooth stuff still feels the best. I like peanut butter and banana, taste like a million bucks. But i really have to work at eating. If i stay busy I miss my every 3 hour eating. I set the timer on the stove, since I am home all day. But as far as drinking the water fast. No way. I look Lady Di advise and I drink warm decaf tea all day.
Everyone take care
I am the same way. Never hungry, and I don't feel full either. I do not measure my food, I'm still on liquidy diet soup, jello, pudding, yogurt etc.. I just eat till I think I've had enough. I can get almost all my fluids in, I have a little trouble w/ getting in my protein. My doctors appt. is not till the 30th, I will talk to him about it then. I'm pretty sure it is normal. Blessings Robin
