My first official plateau

When I saw the dietician last Tuesday I was 269. The next day I dropped 3 lbs. As of today I'm down only 1/2 from a week ago. I'm eating less than 800 calories/day and I'm working out for 2 hrs minimum 4 days/week, and keeping very active on the other 3. I can't believe I'm this sore for 1/2 measly little lb. I go back to the dietician next Thursday and they said they would do a body fat index on me to see if I'm gaining muscle, which is heavier than fat. They also asked if it could be bloat from PMS. It's been only like 19 days, so I don't think it can be pms yet. And I don't "feel" more toned either. Wouldn't I be losing inches if I were toning up? Nothing fits any differently. So that leaves plateau. Which sucks, because the RN at the clinic (I called to ask about it) said that people don't usually hit plateaus this early. But it seems to me that more than a few people on this board are in the same plateau situation as me. Here's hoping we all lose something soon! Sheryl

Don't feel too bad, it's definitely a possibility to have a plateau so soon! My first week I lost 13lbs, then NOTHING the 2nd week! It's started up again, but very slowly... I've heard when you hit a plateau you need to up your liquid and protein intakes- that may help. I'm having trouble taking in any more than I already am, so who knows if that'd help me at all... Good luck, hope you start losing again soon! Rebecca 227/198/130

I posted this to someone else, so I'll just be lazy and cut and paste: I've read that switching from your regular routine to 6 smaller meals a day can help get your metabolism going again when you are in a plateau. Our bodies tend to get into starvation mode (it's our natural survival technique) when we're feeding it so little so feeding it every couple of hours (6 times a day) kind of "tricks" it into not thinking it's going to starve anymore. I used to try this when I was "dieting" and it always helped, so it's worth a try? I have a really hard time trying to eat 3 or 4 times a day right now though, so I guess to eat 6 times a day you'd have to eat REALLY small (like only 2 oz?). In any case though, I've read that other people have had plateaus this early on and they pass, so hang in there! Vi

I'm with you in that "stalled" boat!!! I'm 4 weeks out today and have only lost 1/2 lb in the whole last week. But I've lost 24 total so I'm sure not complaining!!! I have read SO many times that week 3 the body stops and goes "what the heck is going on here - what happened to the Quiznos and pizza and chocolate"?????? It's a little frustrating but we have to try and be patient, the scale will move again! I've also read many times that often when the scale doesn't move we are still losing inches! Also, many people have written that a true plateau is not losing for weeks at a time, we're just at a little stall while our bodies are re-adjusting! It'll happen for us, just not this week Hang tough with me, we'll start seeing that scale moving real soon!! Much love, Carol V

IT'S THE "LOSE & SHRINK SYNDROME", MS CAROL. SOMEONE ON THE BOARD (I WISH I COULD REMEMBER WHO) CALLED IT THAT WHEN YOU STALL & I THOUGHT IT WAS SO CUTE. IT ALWAYS BRINGS TO MIND THE WITCH IN THAT OLD MOVE ABOUT THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD WHERE SHE IS SCREECHING THAT SHE IS "M-E-L-T-I-N-G" ... I CAN JUST SEE ALL OF US WATCHING THE SCALE & THEN "MELTING DOWN TO SIZE" DURING STALLS. GOD BLESS YOU DAWN & NICK

I think that what you are having is a stall not a plateau. From what I have been told a plateau lasts for a month or more. I am on one with you, its been a week since I have lost but am not worried. The same thing happened after my first RNY and I survived it. If you ask on the main board they will all tell you that a stall is common sometime between the 3rd and 5th week post op. They say your body is playing "catch up". I hope it passes soon for both of us! Hugs, Dawn
