Hi...I was looking forward for my soup for so long, I got a terrible disspointment.... I made myself a stupid cream of spinach soup with fat free milk soup...only that I added 2 cloves of garlic & 1 tsp of onion chopped up..I cooked it blended it and strained it...and it only made 3/4 cups..I drank it and got TERRIBLE diarrhea...I think it was too much garlic....I felt miserable all day..than to add insult to injury I drank an Atkins advantage drink and after finishing it my stomach felt TERRIBLE and my heart starting beating really fast and I felt TERRIBLE again...so I spent all day in bed... ..I tried to make cream of wheat and it burned... I was to weak to try again. The good new is that I woke up this morning feeling GREAT, I made some cream of wheat and it was good...then had a banana protein shake all ok...and I joined a gym and am on my way...

Poor Celia....and you were so looking forward to the soup! I haven't had any problems with garlic post-op, but many people do. Give it a couple of weeks and try again. I have had lactose intolerance since surgery and have slowly been adding more milk products back into my diet and have been doing well (but if I want a whole glass I go for the soy). The fast heartbeat and tummyache sounds like dumping. What's Atkins advantage? Does it have a lot of sugar alcohol in it? The nutritionist told me even low carb foods can cause dumping if the sugar alcohol is too high. She told me to stay away from things under 7 gms of sugar alcohol. Congrats on joining the gym. My muscles ache from my workout today, but I feel great at the same time. Hope your day continues to go well. Sheryl

Hi Sheryl! I was wondering how you knew that you were lactose intolerant? I think I may be a little intolerant, but I am not sure at this point. If you don't mind sharing I would really appreciate it. Thanks! Kristine

My surgeon said we might become lactose intolerant for a little while. I noticed it too when I would get a bit of a tummy ache when I tried to drink the shakes, so I switched to lactaid and that helped, but now I'm getting it from the shake mixes too (I guess they have some milk in them too) so I'm avoiding them for a while. Some other symptoms are gas or bloating after drinking milk. This is from my surgeon's website: Hope it helps! Lactose Intolerance Lactose intolerance is a set of symptoms resulting from the body's inability to digest the cow milk sugar called lactose. Gastric bypass surgery can unmask lactose intolerance, but not cause it. Lactose is commonly found in dairy based foods and beverages, and is digested in the intestines by the enzyme lactase. Lactase breaks down lactose so it can be absorbed in the blood stream. When the body does not produce enough lactase, lactose cannot be digested which may result in lactose intolerance. Depending on the individual, the symptoms may vary, including cramping, diarrhea, bloating, gas and nausea. ? Although there are supplements such as Lactaid® that you can take, elimination of dairy is the best approach to solving the problems associated with lactose intolerance. http://www.obesity-surgery-associates.com/solutions.htm

Thanks Vi! That really helps. Sure sounds like me! Ho hum!!! I guess I will try to lay off of the real milk for a while. I am going to try some lactaid or something like that. Dawn has been talking about the Hood low carb milk, maybe I will try that too. Hugs! Kristine

Ditto to what Vi said. I started getting tummyaches on the day I started milk, and they ended the day I went to soy. Except for straight milk now, I'm back on mostly regular dairy. I could probably try to switch back, but I really like the soy milk. They have a chai tea soy latte with almost no caffeine that's really yummy and soy nog, instead of egg nog, and they have a vanilla soy milk, and a soy latte with 1/3 the caffeine of a cup of coffee. Whenever I drink it, I just add extra water to my daily totals to compensate for the caffeine and the nutritionist said it was fine. They are all either fat free or really low in fat and sugars. They are perfect to mix my unflavored unjury in for my protein drink. You should switch to either lactose free or soy milk and see if that helps. Yogurt with acidophilus shouldn't bother you even if you are lactose intolerant. The live bacteria cultures break down the lactose or something. Sheryl

Thanks Sheryl! I will try the things you mentioned in the post. They sound pretty good! I don't think I have ever tried Soy milk, but maybe it's time. I was allergic to milk as an infant and child, so it doesn't surprise me that I am uncovering my lactose intolerance now. Such is life ! Yeah, I haven't had much of problem with my yogurt, but boy are the protein shakes bad news for my family, if you know what I mean??? Thanks again! Kristine

The atkins ready to drink cans were supposed to be ok on my doctors list the have: (copied form website) Indulgent taste High in protein No sugar added No hydrogenated oils Only 2 grams of Net Carbs* per can Fortified with essential vitamins & minerals 170 calories sugar 1g carb 5g I bought them at walmart ...there's the website if you want to look at them http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=145042&catid=49472&trx=GFI-0-MWS&trxp1=49472&trxp2=145042&trxp3=1&trxp4=2&btrx=BUY-GFI-0-MWS I was thinking it was dumping....and I am very sad because I promised myself I would NEVER dump on purpose...that means eating something I shouldn't..I know I didn't do anything bad..but I wanted a dump free record...I am a very nervous person and just to think of eating something bad for me and then dumping & hurt myself and end up in the hospital makes me PANIC..!

I looked at the nutritional info and there doesn't seem to be anything in it that would cause dumping. What we have here is a conundrum. I would call your doctor and tell him what happened and see what he says. The only premade drinks that are on my approved list are Isopure (which is so/so) and Optisource, which I can say from experiece, sucks the big one. Slim fast now makes a high protein drink but the nutritionist said no. She didn't really give me a reason. Sheryl
