Bruising

Hi everyone, I had my lap RNY last Thurs, 10/27 and so far am feeling pretty well, just as I expected. The question I have is about bruising. I know it is normal to have some bruising after surgery, but I didn't realize it would be so large. It goes from about 2 inches from belly button all the way to my side, approx 20 inches and is about 8-10 inches wide. Some of it is yellow, but some is still dark purple and dark red "stripes". Is this normal? I spoke with my neighbor who had the same surgeon, same surgery and showed it to my neighbor's wife. She said he only had a little bruising around bellybutton, nothing like I have. Any suggestions? Thanks, everyone! Roberta PS- I have a JP drain in if that makes a difference

Roberta, I tend to bruise like that, but I got lucky this time and didn't have anything other than a few small ones. I also didn't have a JP drain (what a relief -- I've had them in the past though). You might be someone like me who bruises easy? Vi

they may have given you a blood thinner before surgery. you might ask. my surgeon gave me one and i think with some surgeons it is common practice. if you did get a blood thinner, it will make you bruise alot more than normal. good luck, cheryl

I'll bet the blood thinner is it. I had surg two days before you and have some bruising, but nothing as large as you have described. But everyone is different, and the bruises will disappear. My bruising is around 3 of the incision sites, as well as some bruising at the bottom of my belly, where I think some blood pooled. Good luck to you. Sheryl
