PROTEIN, How are you getting yours in?
I am just 8 days out and I'm finding it very hard to do the shakes, they are to me. I went to GNC and bought one of the Isopure "grape frost" drinks and it was along with the stallone high protein pudding . I'm getting a little in with skim milk, eggs, and yogurt, but not enough as I should. I go for my 1at post-op visit thursday I'm going to see what they suggest. What are you doing and how are you handling protein?

I LIKE THOSE AS WELL BUT THE PINEAPPLE ORANGE BANANA IS THE BEST. THE ICY ORANGE IS VERY DRY & TART. OR, YOU MIGHT GO THE OTHER WAY & TRY THE PROTEIN POWDERS IN A MILK DRINK LIKE SOY MILK OR HOOD CARB COUNTDOWN MILK DRINK (FROM WALLY WORLD). MAYBE IT'S THE TART, ACIDY PART YOUR POUCH CAN'T TOLERATE YET. IT MIGHT DO BETTER ON THE CREAMIER SHAKES ... VERY BERRY VANILLA JUST STIRRED (NOT WHIPPED) IS SOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD & CREAMY. YOU CAN GET THE POWDER FROM bariatriceating.com. OR THE VITAMINE SHOPPE ... STORE OR ONLINE.
GOD BLESS YOU & YOUR TEMPERAMENTAL POUCH! DAWN & NICK
I am day 4 post op. My surgeon calls for liquid only for 3 weeks (Duke) further explained as anything that you can easily get through a ****tail straw and nothing should be blended to get it there (unless it is supposed to be blended).
I am struggling a lot. I feel so full all of the time. I have enjoyed Cream of Chicken Soup with a scoop of added AnyWhey protein. That give 35 grams of protein if you drink all of it (like 21 ounces) but it makes me very full. I am also drinking No Sugar Added Carnation Instant Breakfast, and Atkins Shakes in Vanilla. I tried the Isopure but was not crazy about the fruitiness of it.
The dietician called today but he said to cut down my (other) liquid to 1oz every 15 minutes (instead of 2 oz) but I am even full for that. He said the goal should be 40-60 grams of protein a day but I should be sure not to get dehydrated. Is it possible to get dehydrated if I am drinking 2 oz of something every hour? Unless I get those profect vials, I do not know how to get all that protein in during the day. I am reluctant to buy profect without trying it. Do any local stores carry it so I can try it?
Anyone who has ideas, may be help for me too!
Diane
I have the profect vials and I was OK with them at first but now that I'm sensitive to anything even slightly sweet, the profect vials taste TOO sweet and I can handle one a day, but it's only by thinking of it as medicine and kind of forcing myself to have it.
Maybe get just the sampler. I almost ordered another case, but now that my taste for them has changed, I canceled that order!
I do like the revival soy shakes though and the smart forme stuff is pretty decent (smartforme.com).
I am not getting anywhere near 40-60 grams of protein though. IF I take the PROFECT vial, I get close to about 40, otherwise, not happening.
I'm counting down the days till next Thursday when I can add things like cottage cheese and other stuff. We have to do full liquids for 2 weeks.
Have you tried just double strength skim milk? Get some non-fat dry milk powder and add 1/4 cup to 1 cup of skim milk. It doesn't make it thicker and doubles the protein to 16 gms/8oz.
I like to "mix up" how I get my protein, so I'm doing Isopure ready made, CIB made with double milk and my favorite....
1 cup double strength milk with 1 scoop of unflavored Unjury. Add vanilla extract and splenda to taste. It's soooo yummy. Like a thin vanilla shake. Plus it's 36 gms of protein per 8 oz cup!!!! Tha'ts WAY more protein than anything else I've found.

Melissa,
I have been doing the protein shakes and liquids since 10-7-05. My surgery was on 10-18-05 and I have another week to keep doing them. I spoke to my nutritionist about not being able to get in all 5 of my protein shakes. She says as long as I had 1-2 and keep sipping throughout the day then that will be fine.
I buy Carb Conscious Carnation Instant Breakfast no sugar-added ready to drink. They are delicious. I hate the powder kind, it's clumpy and I can't use nutrasweet products. The ready to drinks have Splenda in them.
You could also go to Wal-Mart and buy the EAS Advantage. They taste good too, I loved the strawberry flavor.
You can also eat 2oz 5 x's a day of turkey breast, chicken (diced) dark meat, tofu, cottage cheese, yougurt ( 8 oz), some fish. I got this great packet that lists alot of foods to start to eat.
Best of luck to you. You'll be getting your protein in, so be patient.
