Home from the hospital...but fluid intake is not going well
Hello all. Well I am home from the hospital now. I actually got released on Friday 10-21-05. I went into surgery on the 18th not knowing if I would have the laproscopic or open RNY done. I am happy to say I woke up (in a lot of pain) to find that my surgeon was able to do the lap. So I have 7 tiny little holes and alot of bruises. Are the bruises normal? I also bruised everywhere they gave me a shot of blood thinners. All the bruises are quite large similar to the size of a fist.
The other thing I am not doing good on is my liquid intake. I am supposed to get in at least 48 oz of liquid of which protein should be about 40g (I am not positive on that number though). 64 oz would even be better. They want me to drink 1 oz every 15 minutes. I feel like I am drinking alot as I sip water all day. However I am no where near the 48 oz. It takes me all day to drink one bottle of water (16.9 oz) and one protein shake (8oz). yesterday I also have about 3 oz of chicken broth.
My question is....How is everyone else getting in all this liquid and should I worry if I can't get it all in yet? Will I be able to get more in as time goes on? Thanks, Tina
Hi Tina,
I had surgery on the 11th and I am just now starting to reach my liquid and protein goals. It feels like all I do is eat and drink all day long. It can certainly get frustrating but hang in there, each day gets a little better.
I had to split up my protein shakes, to make it easier to get enough protein in. Now I do three small shakes (4oz = 22-27 grams protein) per day and then I bought a 4oz measuring glass and I use that for my water intake, I know that I have to drink one of those every hour, I am now getting it down in 1/2 hour.
Good luck to you!
Mary
Tina it takes time, I right now am struggling with getting in protein. I am advanced to full liquids now, but it seems so hard. I feel all I do it take meds, eat, drink use the potty and sleep. I'm going to type up me a chart, by the hour of when I need what to see if that helps me.
and yes by the way the bruises where the blood thinners went are normal, I have them as well. Although I didn't have alot of pain, my Surgery was the 17th and the 18th was the worst day for me... I felt like I had pulled alot of muscles.
Hugs,
Melissa
the bruises are normal especially when you are given blood thinners. my doc only required 32 oz of fluid and 24 of that being milk. i was able to use the milk in tomato soup, carnation instant breakfast (sf) sf nestles quick, diet snapple, etc. are your lips chapping from dehydration? so gald that you were able to get laproscopic. hang in there. cheryl
