Bowel Obstruction - Surgery!

Wednesday night, after eating dinner, I was in severe pain. I thought I must have eaten too fast or too much. It took about an hour, but finally went away. Thursday morning, I had breakfast, then lunch and was fine. I ate dinner and got that pain again. Then things got really bad, because I kept eating for the rest of the night. We went to the drive-in and I picked until around 11 pm. I would wait for the pain to be bearable, then eat another bite. We couldn't stay for the second movie. I went home and went straight to bed. At 3 am I woke up severely thirsty and in quite a bit of pain. I drank some water and it got so much worse. Hubby woke up at 4:30 and I told him I needed to drink something but couldn't. He made me some SF hot chocolate so that I could sip it. Only got a few little sips of that down. By 5 am I told him we had to go to the ER, something was really wrong. In the ER I started throwing up. Then they made me drink this stuff for a CT scan, and I threw that up during the scan. My surgeon was right there watching the scan and told me that since my symptoms had gone on so long, it probably wasn't going to get better. I was in surgery at 11 and out by 12. He gave me pics of my obstruction. It was from scar tissue. Luckily, all they had to do was cut the scar tissue, then stitch my bowel to something else so it wouldn't flip back over. I told him I had had the same pain about a month ago, but the next day it was fine. He said they can twist and untwist, it's when they don't untwist that you can get problems. I stayed in the hospital overnight and am home now. The pain after surgery has not been too bad. But, the pain from that obstruction was something I definately wouldn't want to relive. Marcia

Oh, wow, Marcia, that's horrible! I am so sorry you went through that, but glad you discovered the problem before any more damage was done. I suppose we are all at risk for this, your experience is a good warning to all of us not to ignore any persistent unusual pain. I wish you a quick and complete recovery. Sheryl

I hope you're doing okay Marcia! How scary that is!! Did they say what caused your obstruction...like the types of food or did they say it just happens and they don't know why? Did you feel like you had the flu? I'm just curious. I do wish you a speedy and healthy recovery! Take care!
