A VERY SLOW LOSER?

I think I may have had very unrealistic goals after this surgery. I read about all these people losing so much weight and it is depressing. I had lap rny on Oct.13th and was 278 the day of surgery. Now 2 months later I have only lost 29 pounds. I am fairly active, went back to work after only a week, and get all my water and I think most of my protein in as well. My calories range between 700-800 a day with low carb foods. Is anyone else losing the same rate as me? I feel like a failure! I don't want to have done this for nothing!!

No need to be depressed. We have lost about the same. I noticed our dates were real close. I had to stop looking at peoples weight loss because it was depressing me. I just sit back and enjoy what I have lost. Some people lose faster because they may have more to lose. Be patient... it will fall off....

I suspect that those of us losing more weight are donig so because we had more to lose. there is a great difference in needing to lose say 100 pounds and needing to lose 200 to 300 pounds. you sound like your doing just fine. I have heard various theories on this, if you dont eat enough you can't kick stat your metabolism, if you dont get in enough protein a day you will lose less, etc. I honestly believe that weight loss is just individual to the person. just follow your surgeons instructions and it will work out in the end. good luck. Hi Christine. I understand exactly how you feel!! I wrote a similar post awhile ago. My surgery was 10/19/04 and the day before surgery I weighed 288.5 lbs. Today I finally broke the 250 mark and I am at 249. So that puts me at 39.5 lbs gone! For 2 weeks I was stuck with either gaining a 1 or 2 lbs or losing 0.5 lb. I never thought I would break that 250 mark, but it finally happened. I usually get all of my fluids and protein in (except for these last couple of days I have been having some trouble w/the fluids) and I do have an exercise bike that I ride when my migraines permit. For the longest time I never took in more than appx 550 calories and just recently I have gone a little over 600 calories. I try to keep my fats and carbs low as well. Just keep on doing what you are supposed to do and eventually it will come off! I know it is hard to believe it when the scale never moves or moves in the wrong direction, but we don't eat enough to be gaining any weight and as long as you do some exercising and eat right it will eventually happen. If you ever feel you need to chat or just want to vent, feel free to email me. Good luck and Happy Holiday's. Rachella

How tall are you? I'm 5"0 and my doctor told me up front that I will be a slow loser due to my height (or lack of it). So I have expected the "worst" case senario, and so far I'm pleased. I was 211 on 10/19 and today I am 175. Also he told me the slower it's lost the harder it is to gain back....so if that's the case I'll take it!!! Good luck and keep your sprits up!!! Trust me 29 # is nothing to be disappointed about! Keep up the good work!

I can relate with all of the above-listed posts. I had a rocky start to this adventure. I actually had my RNY on 09/17/04. A leak was discovered on 09/18/04 and a 2nd surgery to correct this was performed on 09/19/04. I spent 20 days in the hospital (half of which were in ICU) and about 6 days on a ventillator, as I lost the ability to breathe on my own. Strangely, I do NOT remember most of this. When I was released from the hospital, I was on TPN (intravenous feeding, that goes into arm and then into the heart and through the body--I was not allowed anything per mouth until 10/28/04.) This is filled w/nutrients and calories and so when the TPN was finally discontinued on 10/28/04, I weighed the exact same as the day I had surgery. So I guess this is that date I need to use - 10/28 vs 09/17. I have lost 25 lbs since this date and I am trying not to be discouraged. It is hard though when you hear about people losing like 80 lbs and such. I just need to tell myself and believe that 25 lbs in 7 weeks is marvelous!! It has been a couple weeks since I lost the 25 and then one day I will gain 1-2 lbs and then a couple days later lose 1-2 lbs. My weight seems to be jumping back and forth. This all just seems so strange. I have to admit though that it is nice to see other people experiencing the same thing--makes me feel a little more "normal".

WOW...I can relate to all the posts...thanks so much for sharing your hearts....I actually gained 14 pounds in the hospital and then asked my surgeon if I got in the wrong line. I then did not loose anything after the first 20 for three weeks and realized I was retaining water. I am on water pills now and making sure I get my water in EVERY DAY...it is so hard but it is worth it. I am 8 weeks out and now down 35 pounds...I am just grateful for the 35...I will surely take it..... Take care and we will win this!!!! Ann

I am so glad to find out that I am not the only one that feels this. I too have read about people losing 100 pounds in three months and felt that I am way behind in my weight loss. I had Lap RNY 10/06/04 and have lost 38 pounds so far. I am starting my new gym membership this week. It was a Christmas present for our family. I am hoping the boost in activity will help my progress. I have really not had any problems eating. A few times I have thrown-up but I think it was because something was too spicy not that I over ate. I went back to work after three weeks. It has been a struggle finiancially being off work but I had to do it. I have just been thankful that my recovery has gone well. I just am so desperate to lose this weight and I know we all lose at different rates. I want to wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday season. Merry Christmas! ROBYN
