Hard to get solids down!!
Hi!
I am also four weeks post op. I have a problem swallowing solid foods. I had some grits to stick in my stoma that put me in a ball. It took about 25 mins to go down and it was not that much, but it was not cooked soft enough. I was in bad pain. It did move. So, when I started to get to solid foods, my meat, no matter how much I chewed, it feels so funny and I began to swallow it and it feels as though it is not going to go down. So, I bring it back up. I will see my doctor on tommorow. I feel as though I may need to have my stoma dilated. I am not getting enough food in, I am sticking to soups which may not be enough.
Sorry to hear that Ms Dee. I am also 4 weeks out, and just started eating solids the other day. I ate grits for the first time yesterday moringing and hadn't had a problem. I also eat turkey, deli sliced, one slice a meal and it goes down with ease. I perfer the deli or very thinned sliced just to make sure that when i chew, it will be grounded good. But I haven't tried any other meats though. I've only tried grits, oatmeal, 1/2 scrambled egg and turkey. I'm kinda scared to try other things, don't want to get sick.
I hope things change for you.

I find it feels like someone shoved their fist down my throught when i eat solds....sooo i take a wee lil glass of water or milk with my meal when i have a bite of meat i follow wiwth a sip of liquid and it goes down better. I know you are not suppose to drink with a meal but i find this helps me to get it down and not end up feeling like crap after i eat for a half hour. The drinking rule is there soo you dont empty your pouch out and feel hungry that fast. After i do the sip thing with solids I still feel full for hours and im not grazing sooo for me right now the sip thing is working...later on if i feel im just not getting the full sensation and eating an hour later then ill stop. Ive heard alot of people that have problems getting solids down and that they used liquid or hot tea when needed. Perhaps ask your doc what he thinks about that ussing liquid to help it ease down. I think id rather have a sip with the meal and have my stoma small then dialated and risk being able to eat more or the stomach empting sooner..
kindest regards

I had the same problem last week. I ended up having a stricture and had to be dilated. There was just a small enough opening for the food/fluids to go down, but it hurt BAD!!!! My doc said about 20% have this complication, but it's no biggie. He just opened it back up where it suppose to be through a scope procedure. Now I feel great and everything is working like it suppose too.
Good luck, I hope everything turns out ok for you!
