Hi, Katy!
I had an open RNY on October 25, 2004. (Woo woo! Four weeks ago today!)
Went back to work full-time on November 15, 2004.
Eating things mostly that are really soft ... or that I chew for about an hour before swallowing!
By day 10 I was on more solid foods, such as thin sliced lunch meat. Now I am eating a lot of chicken (Boston Chicken is GREAT moist chicken). Sliced carrots are my new thing, too. (You just never know ...) I have a lot of soup, have had 1/2 wheat toast with thin-sliced ham sandwich.
Tonight I'm having Chinese food -- Moo Goo Gai Pan -- which will really be translated as I'll eat some chicken out of it, and a nibble or two at the brocolli and carrots. No rice. I'll also pick at some shrimp from another dish.
I'm mostly getting protein in from things like (small canned) tuna (18g), 8 oz. glass of 'no sugar added chocolate milk' (12g), instant breakfast (12g), and yogurt (8-10g).
I have not/will not have pasta, rice, beef, hamburger ... or anything with high fat or high sugar ... for at least until 3-4 months out. I just don't feel like tempting fate, and right now, things are going pretty well ...
I'm sticking pretty closely to the recommendations from my nutritionist. Even salad or lettuce is on my taboo list at this point (causes gas).
An interesting thing to note for me: I seem to be able to eat LESS than I was two weeks ago. Meaning, I get filled up much more quickly. Possibly could be the scar tissue forming around the 'new stomach' connection. No matter, isn't bothering me.
I have not yet 'ed from overloading my stomach. (Thank God.)
My incision is still quite ... well, I'm very aware that it's there. It doesn't really hurt ... unless I try to do to much during the day. I hate that a bra rubs on the scar. The muscles underneath and in my ribcage have 'calmed down' a bit (they were HORRIBLE for the first weeks). My incision has healed REALLY nicely. My doc had a plastic surgery resident close it during surgery, and it really shows.
On a bright note, my weight loss -- which had appeared to have sort of stalled a bit -- has now picked back up. I'm now on the losing about a pound a day routine. Go figure. I'm sure that will change.
So, total lost now is 36 pounds.
Thanks to all on this forum. It definitely brings a sense of calm to know you are not alone in your feelings and worries.

Hi,
I had DS 10/26/04. At 4 weeks post op, I am trying all kinds of food. I only can eat very small amount though. Mostly my stomach likes soups, peanut butter crackers, nuts, yogurt, oatmeal (those quacker oat packets). Yesterday I ate 1/2 of a baked chicken with mashed potato lean quisine at was STUFFED! I have eaten baked talapia and did well with that. I LOVE taco bell beans and cheese and can eat small amount of it. I can eat eggs and bacon. I drink skim milk and chrystal light. I drink lots of water (though still not enough yet!) Baked potatos are good with some cheese or chili on top.
My tummy does not seem to like fried foods like deep fried fish. I don't do well with lunch meats yet, though I did eat some tuna and was fine. I had a couple bites of low fat Icecream and liked it. I ate watermellon once and liked it. I can drink OJ without any problems, but only a few ounces and I have to drink very slowly.
My tummy does not like applesauce for some reason, but I was able to eat a very soft ripe fresh pear. I can not eat chocolate for some reason yet. I LOVED chocolate preop! I kind of miss it sometimes.
I ate a few bites of pumpkin pie and it was fine. I ate a couple bites of pecan pie and did not really feel to good. Apple pie was YUCK when I took a tiny tiny bite.
Sometimes if I wait too long to eat, I get sick so I have to eat a small snack or meal every 3-4 hours.
As time goes by, I should be able to eat anything I want in smaller amounts. NO DUMPING for me! I am so happy about that.

DS 10/26/04
249/220/130ish
down 29 pounds in 4 weeks and LOTS of inches.
I had my surgery on 10-26. I pretty much eat whatever I want now except for rice, raw veggies, red meat, and of course sugared foods. Thank God I haven't had any troubles. I love chicken which I hated before my surgery. I was supposed to stick to the pureed diet for 8 weeks but I can't. I am chewing a lot and listening to my body which is something I never did. If it doesn't hurt, I do it. I did dump once -- on eggs. I waited too long to eat and ate way too fast. I won't make that mistake again. Try some egg salad with low fat mayo and mustard. My surgeon suggested that. It works really well for me. I eat it with reduced fat crackers and it's very yummy. I feel wonderful now. I think I'm over that horrible drained feeling. I have lost 41 lbs so far so I think I'm doing ok. I also had an open rny and my incision is still sensitive. It's especially sensitive after sitting down for too long or walking too long. It gets better every day. Good Luck!!!

Katy,
I had open RNY on October 19th and yes, I still hurt. Especially lower down on the right side of my incision. The surgeon said it was my muscles growing back together, but I wondered why it only hurts in that one spot? I still can't lie on my stomach like I used to.
I'm eating:
refried beans and cheese
soft scrambled eggs
moist chicken
peanut butter on 5 crackers
Atkins Morning start strawberry crisp protein bars
blue bunny yogurt made with splenda
slice of cheddar cheese
cooked ham luncheon meat wrapped around cream cheese.
hamburger patty out of Burger King Jr. burger

My surgery was Oct. 27th. I'm in the "soft food" stage. I have the best luck with eggs right now. Occasionally, fish will stay down too. When I went to weigh in last week, I briefly spoke with the nutritionist, and she said I could try a few carbs. She suggested cheese toast, toast with peanut butter, and Wheat Thins Crisps. She said the carbs would help with my energy.
So far, I've lost 28 pounds. I did ok Thanksgiving (one bite too many), but I spent a lot of time with my great-nephew who came down with a cold on Thursday. You guessed it! Now, I am getting one too. The sinus drainage is the worst part. That stuff is taking up all the room in my pouch, and I'm having the worst time getting and keeping food down right now. Here's hoping Zi-Cam works.
Howdy Katy and others!
I had lap RNY on October 8th and am doing really well thus far. The only thing I've tried that doesn't sit well in Petey (yes, I named my pouch Petey...he does have a mind of his own!) is Shrimp. Tuna seems to be my godsend! (I hated tuna before!) I get the yummy new flavors they have in the pouches. I mix them with non-flavored tuna out of the pouches to make them stretch farther. They are really good! I am eating alot of low fat string cheese and low fat cheese chunks. Eggs go down well, but I am getting really really sick of them!
The other godsend is chili! It is wonderful to order when we are out because I know I do well on it and almost every place has it. I also ask for some cheese on it. Load on the protein!! This morning at my doctor's appointment I was upgraded to being able to try and eat basically whatever I want that is low/no sugar and low/no fat. Sounds good to me! I also can have bread and fruit and vegetables again now! I am going to try a small salad for lunch! I have been craving that and vegetable beef soup which will be supper!
Good to hear from all of you! I need to check this board more often.
Dana
Mine was lap, and if I'm careful I can eat most things.
chicken salad on melba toast
meatballs (Subway)
chicken noodle soup (subway)
1/2 enchilada
junior burger- meat with a couple nibbles of bun
guacamole
chili - Wendy's and homemade
string cheese
scrambled eggs with cheese (Denny's) with a couple nibbles of toast
cream cheese on crackers
ham and cheese roll up
chicken
fried shrimp- 1 1/2
chicken from a pot pie
minestrone soup (Olive Garden)
avacado
quiche
cheese off a pizza
So far I've lost 42 lbs and I try to keep my portions really small and stop the minute I feel full.
I can also drink Minute Maid light lemonade (Wendy's) made with Splenda
Feeling pretty good and will start Curves after Jan. 1
Hi there, my name is Tricia. I had lap rny 10/27/04. No pain/incisions healed.
I was doing very well until I went from soft diet to the new phase of pureed meats/soft foods. I can;t stand the thought of pureed meat, so I am trying to make it moist and to cut it into small piece. I may not be making them samll enough or prehaps am eating too fast. My main challenges: getting enough protein, not drinking fluids near mealtimes as I was accustomed to preop. I have been having some vomiting and it is not predictable. I am able to hold down fluids (so maybe no stricture). I think I might be eating a bit fast, so will work on that. Every day is different for me in terms of what I can and can not hold down in my pouch. One day I had fresh haddock (per the RD) and vomited immediately. A week later a lightly breaded frozen fish filet portion stayed down fine- go figure!
I can eat: eggs, soft cheese, soups, water, crystal light, tuna, deli lunch meat, peanut butter, toasted bread, small amounts of milk, SF jello and puddings, small amounts moist chicken or turkey (in gravy) and an occasional tiny piece of chocolate (bad!) I tolerate small amounts of carb countdown light eggnog (1/2 strength).
I haven't tried pork (tough to chew) or beef (common to not tolerate this).
I would love to try a salad, but I am afraid of the lettuce coming up, blech! LOL.
I tried: sips of diet caffeine free soda (even with stirring out the fizz and all it did was make me full and gassy/not able to eat, so no more), lactaid milk and carb countdown 1% milk (too sweet.)
I will be 6 weeks postop on Weds 12/8- 32 #'s lost so far. Just found this board tonight; looks wonderful! Nice to meet everyone. Let's keep posting as we all progress.
