Pepcid/ thought it was as needed-wrong

I learned a lesson yesterday. My doctor had prescribed Pepcid for me with my other meds from the hospital. I filled it but never used it-I don't have acid problems! Well it seemed that I am having a harder time eating solid foods. I saw the doctor and told him. He asked if I was taking the Pepcid. I said no, acid wasn't a problem. WRONG!! The stomach makes acid all the time. In the small pouch it irritates it and causes swelling which can cause the hole to swell smaller, not allowing as much food. He said this could eventually lead someone to the emergency room. So if you are prescribed an an-acid its not as needed but it is needed. Just some thing for people who think for themselves, not listening when they should.

Thanks for that info Betty. I was prescribed it too and was wondering about it since I have not had any problems with food. It was on my list of questions for my surgeon. Luckily, I did fill the RX and have been taking it!

Hi Betty, Thanks for the information. I was prescribed pepcid as well. I didn't question it, but it didn't worry me when I forgot to take it two times. Now after reading your post I will be sure not to forget it again. Thanks, my doctor didn't explain it to me. Amber -30

Is this the same Pepcid that you can buy over the counter? How many do you take per day?

I would think it is but in a stronger dose. I don't know what strength the over the counter one is. When I got home I was suppose to take 40 mg at bedtime. He now has me taking 20 mg twice daily. Plus since I hadn't taken the first prescription he also added Carafate Suspension.
