protein shakes

I am now 15days out and I seem to be having trouble with my shake intake. I guess I maybe a little confussed as well as to how many times a day I should be actually drinking them. I start off with the whey protein shakes from GNC then after about 4 days I started feeling nausious from drinking them so I stopped. then my angel gave me some samples from the one she drinks which is designer whey shakes and I can say it does taste alot better but now here is the problem. with following the eating guild lines inckluding the shakes by the end of the day I feel so weighted down like I have over eaten all day. if I take out the shakes 3xs a day and some of the snacks then I feel alot better. I honestly feel that it is just to much to be eating all day. I didnt eat & drink this way before I had surgery so I guess I am feeling confused by what is right and wrong. {no I am not eatting the wrong things} any suggestions? besides this everything is going great! I feel good and I am starting to get active again. just need to get the eating thing right Sophia 348/319/160

Hi Sophia, There are plenty of shakes out there that are decent to drink. My favorite is the Matrix 5.0 (chocolate and Vanilla) You can get it through absolutesupplements.com or bariatriceating.com It costs about $30.00 but it is 2x as much as you get in the GNC tubs. This is for a 5 pound bag. It does not taste like a diet drink, it tastes as if you are cheating. YUM!! I drink between 1-2 protein drinks a day, depending on what I eat. There are some really good sources of protein out there: Tuna - 13 g (2 oz) String cheese - 9 g (1 stick) Cottage cheese - 7g (2 oz) Chicken - 14 g (2 oz) Refried Beans - 6 g (I think) For the past couple of days I have been having 2 oz of tuna mixed with 1 tsp of Light Mayo, put on 4-5 Ritz Whole Wheat Crackers...It is so yummy. I have that for lunch and dinner everyday With cottage cheese (I did not like it before surgery), I mix 2 oz cottage cheese with seasoning salt and some salsa or taco sauce. It is really yummy too. Another thing I enjoy is pizza sauce in a bowl with mozz cheese and pepperoni, it is just like a pizza without the bread. I try to get in about 40-50 g of protein through food, then I only have to have 1 protein drink. I also got a recommendation from a friend to blend ham and cream cheese, then spread it on Ritz Whole Wheat crackers. It sounds great, but I have to go buy ham. My doc has a protein shake once a day on the meal plan and its usually a snack midday or before bed. I looked all through the plan an no where does it have two a day. He says normal (or what ever stage your in what normal is suppose to be )meal protien first (eat whatever has the most protein on your plate and if you have room eat the other stuff from the meal three times a day then three snacks if you can!!!! he seems to think that early out that I prolly wont be eating 6 and just says take it slow eat till your satisfied then push the plate away. He says dont be afraid to eat but don't be a clean your plate member if you don not need to be. That what got us here in the first plate is finnishing all the stuff on our plate. We have a big reserve just as yet assuming we all here have about 100 to loose. He says part of it is to relearn everything we have been doing and that 99% of people that have this surgery is learning to eat slowly and listen to your body when it tells you its full is a very valuable lesson. Hope this helps. I maybe eat three TOPs meals a day why? Because im just not hungry enough to eat the rest and i still have a BIG reserve and i seem to be ok on the energy thing. Perhaps later if i still only eating 2 to 3 oz at a time this will change but for right now ill trust what my body tells me and what the doc said.

Sophia- Hi there i don post much here but I too was having issues from the shakes. I could not get them down cause they all were too sweet. I went to gnc and they have a liquid protein that you add to a little water and it is good. it comes in a punch flavor. Also they have these premade drinks that are soooo yummy. In each drink there is 40 grams of protine. They are like a juice or allsport type thing. Only there is 0 suger, fat or carbs. I found this to be my saving grace. When I was done with the drink i was sad cause it tasted so good dawn

One thing I just learned. Recently when I was sure I wasn't getting enough protein and couldn't stand the shakes I would get a smoothie from planet smoothie. One with protein powder can have 30 gram of protein. Its wonderful. Then I discovered they have the packets of protein blasts (a powder) for $8.99 a box. Thats for 20 packets. Each has 7 grams of protein. I mixed some with juice, banana, and ice this morning and you don't even taste the protein. Wonderful for a change.
