protein-help!
Hi Nina!
Hood Chocolate Milk can be found at most grocery stores (Pick N Save..here in our neck of the woods) in the Milk section. It is a Low carb/high protein Milk that is AWESOME! I can't tell any difference taste wise ..... Absolutely Love it! I know some Dr's are different with how they structure your eatting after surgery, some are on pureed for much longer. My Dr. advocates that eatting food is the way to stay full longer, rather than liquids that can go right through the pouch faster, leading you to be hungry later. However, He does advise to get in Milk because of the protein value, and since it works as a liquid that we can sip .... it should be done between meals, not as a meal. So far has worked well for me, Right now my eatting has greatly improved since My Dr. gave me a better idea of how to work it all in. Haven't had a problem since!
Here's my daily plan:
Breakfast: 2 eggs (usually) 6 gms each = 12 gms of Protein
1/2 of a yogert (3 oz) = 3 gms of Protein
Mid Morning: 8 oz of Hood Choc Milk = 12 gms of Protein
Lunch: 3-4 oz of Chix (7 gms ea oz.) = 21-28 oz of Protein
1 Tblsp BBQ sauce = 0 Protein
Mid Aft: 8 oz of Hood Choc Milk = 12 gms of Protein
Dinner: 3-4 oz of Chix or other (7 gms ea oz.) = 21-28 oz of Protein
Total Proteins = 12+3+12+21+12+21 =81 gms using the lower portions
I've been on a Chix kick lately, I go buy the ones the grocery store makes and has at the deli (broiled/broasted?) Its an entire chicken and I take it home and just cut up/take bones and skin off and freeze so I have it on hand if I can't find something else equal to the protein portions.
I hope this helps you Nina!
good Luck!
Debby
Hi Cindy,
I am 3 1/2 weeks post op and am also having trouble with the protein shakes, I just asked Debby about the hood choc. milk. However one thing that has helped me a little bit is the Carnation Instant Breakfast low carb/ high protein drink in chocolate. It's not great, but is a heck of alot better than some of the other ones I tried, it's not super high in protein but I figured any little bit I can get helps.
Good Luck, Nina
Hi! It looks like I am rather different than most rny patients. I am 12 days post op and I have absolutely no trouble getting my liquids in. In fact I get more than 64 oz. in per day. I really didn't understand it.
Anyway, to supplement my protein while I am still on the clear liquid phase I have been drinking a bottle of Isopure pre-mixed a day. Yes, I know 40g isn't enough, but it is much better than zero! Anyway, my doctor said it was ok since it was clear. It is available at most GNC stores, but for those in Canada or elsewhere without GNC access you can buy it at many places online. Sometimes shipping is rough, but look around... I know these places carry it: www.abslide-outlet.com and a1nutritionproducts.com. Generally a case of 12 runs around $37.00, it is expensive, but since we aren't spending money on food it makes sense!
Also, I found a wonderful product at www.bariatriceating.com. It is a tasteless protein powder made for cooking and baking and the such... but they say it is great for new post ops to add to their broth. I can't remember the exact name, it is something like zero taste or tasteless, if you go to the website then go to their protein page it is toward the bottom in the farthest right column. Check it out, it is priced right too!
I hope these products help! Have a great day.
