protein-help!
Hi Debbie!
I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op. I haven't had any trouble getting my protein down. I'm still working on getting enough fluids in though. At week two it became easier as I was able to take in more than an ounce every 15 minutes. To help with the protein, I add 1/3 cup of non-fat dry milk to a lot of things to add 8 gms of protein. I add it to Sugar free/fat free pudding, shakes, protein soups or cream soups. When I make a strained cream soup I also add 1 scoop of whey protein which also adds another 18.5 gms of protein. I was told not to go over 30 gms per serving because your body won't absorb it anyway. There is also a milk called Carb Solution (in the dairy section). They have chocolate or white milk that is lower in carbs and has 12 gms of protein per cup vs. 8. I use it instead of water in my shakes or Carnation Instant breakfast for added protein. I hope this helps! It will get easier and soon you'll be on to the next phase in your post-op diet.
Take care.
HELLO. CONGRATS ON YOUR SURGERY . YOUR ON THE OTHER SIDE JUST LIKE ME. MY RNY WAS ON THE 20 TH OF OCTOBER. I DONT KNOW IF THIS HELPS, BUT I DID A SCHEDULE ON A PAPER. I PUT ON THE PAPER THE HOUR SINCE 5:OO AM AND EVERY HOUR SO ON UNTIL ABOUT THE TIME I GO TO SLEEP (10:00 P.M. OR 11:00PM). I PU THE ALARM OR A CELLPHONE SO THAT THERE IS NO THAT MUCH NOISE. I WROTE DOWN ON A DIFFERENT PAPER ALL THE OUNCES FROM THE PROTEIN AND THE WATER (WHICH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT) AND DIVIDED IN 4 OUNCES EACH. I THEN LOCATED IN EVERY HOUR WHAT I AM SUPPOSED TO DRINK. (KEEP A BOTTLE OF WATER ON YOUR BEDSIDE). FOR EXAMPLE:
5:00AM-4 OUNCES OF WATER
6:00AM-4 OUNCES OF WATER
7:00AM-4 OUNCES OF WATER
8:00AM-4 OUNCES OF THE PROTEIN SHAKE (LUCKILY YOU WILL BE AWAKE) AND ETC. ALL THE HOURS THAT ARE LEFT IN BLANK, USE THEM FOR THE JELLO, PUDDING, BROTH, ETC. IT HAS WORKED FOR ME. AND AFTER THE SECOND WEEK YOU WILL FEEL BETTER.
Debbie,
I know this sounds strange, however, I had surgery on Monday. I am not into eating cold food every meal. I mix stage 1 baby food chicken (in the jar) with canned chicken gravy. I add enough water to make it thin enough to drink. I warm it up and sip on it. I also mix this with instant mash potato. The gravy makes the meat taste so good. Each jar of baby food meat is 8 grams of protein.
I have had no problem with keeping it down and because I make it thin it can be considered protein and fluid.

Dear Debbie:
I was just going to post the same question. I am one week post-op and I simply cannot get the protein down---the shakes make me sick. I can get most of the water down if I really, really try.
I just ordered some juice proteins from "bariatriceating.com" which are supposed to be good: Fuzzy Navel, Caribbean Cooler, Berry. They will be here in 3 days. Until then, I am not sure what to do except keep trying.

In Ontario, at least the city I am in, I dont have a lot of options. Most of the proteins were tolerable, but now i gag them down. IM not leaving the US until I find something good though.
Im trying the scheduale that was mentioned above, but not starting at 5 am. I started at 8 and have managed 10 oz. Its almost time for 4 more.
Hi there! I am at just over 2 weeks, Surgery was October 14th. Until I hit the 2 week mark, it was VERY hard!!! My surgeon literally yelled at me for not getting in all my protein and water! But, he has moved me onto the next stage and has informed me that I can have 3-4 oz of chicken at each meal! Although boring (but I eat it with some bbq sauce...not much) this gives me 7gms per oz or 21-28gms of protein at each meal. (you can substitue similiar meats/eggs/etc in place of chix with the same protein amts) Then I also drink the Hood chocolate milk in between meals to give me an additional 24 gms. The Hood milk works double duty and gives you liquid and protein.
So far this seems to be working much better now!
Hope it helps!
