POST-OP: who's NOT feeling great?

I had my surgery on Monday morning at 8am. According to the surgeon, everything was textbook and I did great. I was so groggy all day Monday I don't remember too much. Tuesday I was more alert as the way wore on and felt better every passing hour. Then Tuesday night I had a bit of an "episode": I woke up freezing, teeth chattering , very nauseous and had short breaths because of shaking so bad. I did have a small fever -- 100.3, plus my pulse ox was down below 85 and my heart rate was about 114. The nurse took care of everything and I got past it, but all day Wednesday I my spirits sort of faded. I felt ok and people said I looked wonderful for having surgery 2 days prior. But I was having a lot of trouble distinguishing between gas pain, wound pain, incision pain, fullness, and hunger. There were so many things going on down in my abdomen I couldn't one thing from the other. Plus I was wanting real food pretty badly. Everything sounded good. Last night, my final night in the hospital, I woke up having to pee really badly and had half of it down my legs by the time I sat down on the toilet. After the nurses took care of me I laid in bed crying and feeling sorry for myself as it seemed I am destined to forever experience the "fat girl" humiliations. Today when I got home I began a full liquid diet, and had 1.5 oz of cottage cheese at 11:15 am for my first meal. It tasted really good and I stopped because I thought I could feel a little hard ball below my ribs that seemed to indicate I was full? Then about 1 hour ago I had my first protein drink, 2 oz per my physician. But I still feel hungry! And I still want pizza! I thought I wouldn't be hungry so much and that, like most of the other patients I know, I wouldn't even desire other foods anymore. As of right now I don't even feel different than I did before surgery, just sore and emotional. I have to believe it will get better and that in a matter of weeks I will laugh away the doubts I have right now. I won't let myself believe I have made a mistake. But I hate being hungry, it makes me want to cry.

awww hun a big hug goes out to you. I have been reading alot of post op experience and ive found that alot of post ops runa slight temp and as long as its not abover 102 I beleive it is normal. I had a slight fever after my last operation too(not wls) related. I also have read in alot of posts about the old stomach growling as it shrinks back to almost non existant and from what i read it is quite common and makes sense. After all we gotta have a pretty big stomach and it will take time to shrink. Same as when you have a baby and the uterus contracts until its back to normal size As your able to have more solid things that will stick to your ribs kinda thing you will feel more satisfied longer. Also people tend to get real emotional after surgery. Its a big wammo for our systems and hormones and what not. Sooo just try and remeber that you may be an emotional wreck for a bit but it WILL BE WORTH IT. huggs and prayers out to you and keep us posted

Michelle, I feel so sorry that you are feeling bad. Its bound to get better. You didn't make a mistake. From what I understand its pretty normal, I wish I was in your place, that way my surgery would already be done and I could be looking forward to the doubts drifting away as the weight melts off! Hang in there... I'm praying for you, and I really mean that! Can I ask what type of bypass you had? Blessings~ Robin R

Me too! I also had surgery Monday. I had a slight fever, low blood pressure the next day but they went away. My first few days at home were okay. Now I'm hungry! Well I guess its not true hunger. I can tell my stomach is full but I want something solid to eat. It must be the head hunger they talk about. You are lucky you have got cottage cheese. For 2 weeks my doctor only allows clear liquids, crystal light, jello, broth, sugarfree popcycles, apple or cranberry juice. I was thinking of pizza tonight too. It would be good even to just sit with it and smell it. I think I'm getting moody too. "They" say it won't last. I hope "they" are right. A thing I wonder about, if you had this problem. I weighed more when I came home than when I went in. I hope my feelings, food and weight start to change soon.
