I just got back from my pre-op appt with my Doc and got a date..WOOHOO..my question is this....I am having surgery (Lap RNY) on Wednesday and I want to go back to work the following Monday and they all looked at me like I was crazy and said there was no way and that I had to take 3 weeks off.....that sounds like an awfully long time. Looking for advice for those who've been there...can I expect to be back to work on Monday?

LOL- i don't know about crazy, but I do agree it seems early....this is still major surgery, even if done laparoscopically......give yourself time to rest and heal... just my 0.2 cents!

I'm having mine on Tues and plan to go back to work Monday. It may only be part time, but I have to be back. It will mostly be sitting at my desk, but I have to be here. My PA said I could drive if I wasn't taking any pain medication.

Ouch, yeah, that sounds soon...for ANY lap surgery the recommended is 2 weeks and even that is if you have a fairly sedentary job. I would recommend that none of you pu**** you may end up with Post-Op complications that not only put you back out of work anyway, but possibly back in the hospital I'd hate to see that happen, so my advice, plan accordingly. Also depends on your surgeon. My best to all of you! Danielle

This surgery is not trivial - laparoscopic or not. Give yourself time to heal.

Ummmmmmmmm Kristie. . . .From what I've been told by my hand holder. . . it's not going to happen. Even with a sedentary position. I thought I could go back in three weeks and my hand holder says I won't be in any shape for at least four weeks post op. I've been told I won't be able to drive for at least two weeks. Is this a financial decision? You will do yourself a big favor, don't rush back to work. Give yourself time to heal and get back on you feet and you'll enjoy your new life more.

Also, You have to give yourself time for the anesthesia to fully wear off your body. I've heard it still effects you for a while. I've heard you will be very tired. I'd take it easy if I were you. I plan on being off as long as my Dr. will let me. Plus, you would hate to be sick at work. Good luck, Renee*

Thank you all for your responses! I really only have about 4 days vacation...but I know I can work around that if I have to. I just can't see my boss being happy if I were off for 3 weeks I'll have to see how I feel and play it by ear.

I'm with you on the vac./sick days. I used soo many of them on my pre op appointments. I think I only have 1 and a half left! You can file for State disability. Your boss may not be happy with your time off, but if you have a Dr's note, they can't really say anything. Good luck Renee*
