Hi Deborah, I smoked up until my consultation visit with my doctor on Aug. 3. He told me I had to quit 1 month before surgery, but I decided to go ahead and get it over with. It has been very hard, and I know that I am eating much more, but at least I have it behind me now. Good luck!!!!! I did it cold turkey, and the first 3 days were the worst, but once I got past that, it wasn't so bad.

My game plan here is to do it while I am on the pain meds, should make the moodiness easier. Also, I will not have to worry about overeating because I am sure I will not be in the mood...lol

Um, yeah, that would be me. Well, it was me, I have since quit, if you want to call it that. I have not had a cigarette since Friday night. I, too, was advised to quit a month before surgery but just couldn't. It was the hardest thing I ever tried to do, even though I KNEW it was for my own good. What helped? Not that I recommend it, but I got walking pneumonia and didn't even WANT another cigarette. Unfortunately though, I just quit, what, a little over two weeks before surgery-probably not good Supposedly smokers have a higher risk of pulmonary embolisms and that is why the recommendation to quit is made. So, here's the devil's advocate in me After doing some research I noticed that most surgeons administer heparin injections right before and even after surgery. Heparin is used to prevent blood clots. Hi Deb, I am having a bit of trouble myself with quitting. I am ok when I am at home, but at work I am around it and have a hard time not having one. I really need to stop completely since my surgeon wants me to quit a month before surgery and that point has come to pass! I wish I could give you some sound advice, but I can't! I noticed we have the same date, GOOD LUCK and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! -Amber

Okay you guys listen up, It is important that you stop ASAP before surgery. You don't want any pulmonary problems and your recovery time is also affected. I quit about 4 weeks ago and man it was so hard but my life is worth it. Even if you can stop for good, please stop before you go for surgery!! Elisa

When I went for my consultation they told me I had to be smoke free 8 weeks before my surgery or they would not do it. My consulation was on July 16 and I quit July 18 and have been smoke free since. It was so hard to quit but I did it cold turkey because I did not want that to ruin my chance of havign this surgery. So, my advice is to quit cold turkey and just realize that having this operation is more important then smoking. Good luck! Laura
