Sandra, I'm with you there. Every Sunday at church people stare at me. I know I would probably do the same thing. This one guy calls me flaka. That means skinny lady. I know it is a compliment, and he means well. Easter Sunday was weird because people came who hadn't come for a long time. They all freaked out. I guess it was fun, but I do wi**** would stop. My son, who had the surgery in December is coming home from college in 2 weeks. I know he will get some reactions too. He is pretty quiet, so he will want to get newness overwith soon. Karen

Topic: RE: PLS RESPOND ASAP....SURGERY CANCELLED
So sorry his surgery was cancelled. I almost had the same thing happen to me. Went to see the surgeon 6 days before the scheduled surgery and was told blood pressure was too high and I would not have surgery unless it came down. I have been on Atenelol for years. I got in to see my PCP the next day and told her the situation. I was also retaining water at the time. She put me on Diavan along with the Atenelol. I bought a blood pressure cuff and monitored my pressure at home and recorded everytime I took it and what it was (PCP suggested this as there is a known syndrome of White Coat high blood pressure-just being in the Dr.'s office makes blood pressure go up) and I took this record with me when I went to the hospital on the day of surgery. Luckily for me the added drug lowered my pressure to within reasonable limits and the surgery was done. I am still taking the Atenelol but my PCP says if/when my pressure gets in the 120's that I probably can stop taking it (am currently just above 140). Good luck with your brother. What an awful disappointment it was for him. Keep his chin up and I am sure with some help from above all will go well for him. Carol

Topic: My WLS Journey
I started my journey on 10/06/03 with a open RNY. I am a Type II diabetic and was on 2 different insulin shots twice a day and pills to control my diabetes. I also suffered from severe sleep apnea. I also have neuropathy in my feet which with the excess weight prevented me from even walking through a store. I weighed in on the day of surgery at 354 pounds. I am currently at 210 and still losing but slower. I am no longer on any insulin or drugs to control my diabetes. I no longer suffer from sleep apnea. I have loads of energy and can do way more walking. I even can work in my shed on my tractor, I don't have to depend on my teen-age son to do the work for me. I feel 150% better than I did a year ago. I did find something that has helped me along the way;I now have a new hobby-cooking and am good at it. I eat most everything that I want in way smaller portions. I choose not to eat junk food/candy. I choose to eat healthy food. I have developed a strong love of really spicey foods and am munching on a piece of my own Habenero chile flavored beef jerky. If a dedicated couch potato can do this life style change then anybody can. Just wanted to say this and to say Hi to everyone. Keep plugging away and you will get there. Lester

Way to go Steve. I had the surgery in 10/03 and have lost 144 pounds to date-lots of inches. Got 20 pounds to my goal weight of 190. Sounds like you are doing really good. I was at 354 when I went in for surgery. Doesn't it feel a whole lot better to get the weight off? Keep doing good. Just wanted to say that. Later. Lester

I want to be invisible. What I mean is that for so many years people have stared at me 'cause I was fat. Now that I've lost 110 lbs, people are always looking and commenting on how much better I look. I want all this part to be overwith...don't want to be the object of attention. I want to look normal and walk into a room without anyone staring...in other words, be invisible. Don't want to be looked at anymore for any reason. Sandra Open RNY 10/17/03 6 months tomorrow!

Topic: RE: Lack of energy / B-12 shots
If your B-12 has taken a nose dive, you probably should compare your past labs with your current ones and look for trends. Don't wait until you are in trouble. Doctors sometimes only look at the number and see that it is within the "normal" range so they say we are fine. They SHOULD be looking at our past couple of lab results so they can see if we are in a continuous fall. Much easier to rescue someone before they crash. I've had to argue with my surgeon who is pretty good otherwise. He said my B-12 was fine at 414 at my 3 mo. Problem was it was 800 at the 4 week checkup and I've been doing sublingual B-12 every day since surgery. He said low B-12 was under 300, and if at my 6 mo checkup it had dropped that low, he would order B-12 injections. I think that is ridiculous! Why wait until I am in a hole and then try to dig out? I've increased my sublinguals and have my 6 mo checkup next Thursday. We'll see what happens. If he won't give me the injections I'm going to find another doctor. Sandra
