Let's hear it, Oct. Post-Ops - What Makes YOU Dump??
Boy, this learning to eat again stuff can be sooooo difficult!! So far, I've discovered that Ensure and extremely sweet tea make me dump (DUH! Too much sugar! *l*). And you sure do have to chew the you-know-what out of every bite! Has anyone else had that awful feeling like the food is just plain stuck in your esophagus? It's almost like the worst gas pain in the world - the pressure is UNREAL!! The only thing that relieves it is throwing up, and I HATE doing that!
So what makes everyone else dump so far? We all know that this learning to eat again business is trial and error, so I'm just curious to know how everyone else is doing. Oh, I also discovered something else today. I was making my 16-month-old a slice of bread with peanut butter. I usually just fold it over and cut the crusts so that she has like a little "mini-sandwich". Well, my stupid self decided that I could use the protein, so I made the same thing for myself. No problem for my daughter - she downed hers with ease! Mom, on the other hand - HA! I ate half of the half a sandwich and my tummy couldn't take it. I was praying to porcelain God yet again! I think it's because my belly isn't quite ready for bread. I swear, I could feel it swell inside me!
Oh, here's what I do best on: A 1-egg omelet made with the Kraft 2% American Cheese singles (chewed beyond a pulp, of course!), fat free, aspartame sweetened Dannon yogurt with a sprinkle of Great Grains cereal (which I allow to "soak" in the yogurt until very soft) for some texture, all soups, esp. Chicken Noodle, apple sauce, fat-free pudding cups, KFC individual sized mashed potatoes and gravy (I was SO thrilled when my surgeon allowed me to have these!!).
However it's going for each of my fellow October post-ops, I wish you the best and I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers!
God Bless!
Amy
Woah isnt it just fun? I thought I learned to chew well enough when I was two hah!... So far I have complications with water ughh hurts my tummy. I had some chicken noodle soup the other day and thought I was absolutely going to die. Never bothered me before but that day it did. Oh and umm tried an egg scrambled at 1 week like doc said and it killed me ..tried another one fried and did just fine with that, so I suppose the scrambled one was too dry. I haven't gotten in my water like I should for the past week and I can so feel it, kinda sluggish and feelin down.. Gotta do something bout that, just dont have the want too and I'm only 4 weeks out Monday jeesh when does it get better I wonder. Oh well have a good one
This eating is interesting. The only thing I've dumped on (so far) is mashed potatoes. I don't know why, but I've tried potatoes twice (once mashed and once in soup form) and dumped both times. No more potatoes for me.
I haven't had problems with anything else: tuna w/mayo, eggs (any style), cheese, cooked ham (lunch meat), sausage patties, tamales, refried beans, broccoli cheese soup, fish fillet, green beans, chicken fajita meat, taco meat, hamburger, cottage cheese, sugar free tapioca pudding, sugar free popcicles, peanut butter cheese crackers, chili, pizza (I don't eat the crust), apple with the skin and with cheese, Yo-Carb Yogurt, Le Carb Ice Cream, Sugar free jam, melba toast, Wow Tortilla Chips, beef jerky.
Gee, I didn't realize I was eating so many things!!!

I eat mostly chicken. Of course I have to chew chew chew chew and chew again. I dump when I am full. I do not know when I am full so I try to stop when I think I should be full. BUT if I dont I get the same thing as you Amy....
that awful feeling like the food is just plain stuck in your esophagus. It's almost like the worst gas pain in the world. After I dump I feel better. So it appears we are all having issues with the dumping. I do not regret this surgery at all. Best of luck to you all.
My first was one-half scrambled egg. Eeeew!
I found, however, that I can have a very small egg-white omelet. MUCH better.
So far, it occurs mainly with eating either too fast or too much. The doctor wasn't kidding -- this is a TINY little stomach!
As for sweets, well, I haven't had the nerve to try any yet.
So far, my best results come from chicken, cottage cheese and my sister's pot roast. I'll admit, it was a special pot roast, and I had darned little of it, but it sat very well.
Hi Amy, I am so glad to hear how you are doing. I had one dumping episode my first time on solids. I had fat free/sugar free choc. pudding and I thought I came down with the instant flu bug. I haven't dumped since but then again I really am not eating anything sweet only sugar free. My 4th and 5th week I was getting pain in the lower esphogus and having the foamy throwups but when I went to see my doc for my one month check up he said I was eating too quickly and to slow down. So I did as the doc ordered and I have been better ever since. I do best on cottage cheese, over easy egg, meatloaf, any dark meat foul because they are moist, meatballs, tuna, salmon, brussel sprouts, brocolli and cantelope. Many blessings to you on your continued journey.
i've dumped once.. it was on an Adkins protein drink... weird...
I can eat sugar... (have had chocolate).... weird weird weird.
I pretty much live on cheese, chicken and my hot tea with milk!!
(my breakfast of 10g protien is 1 cup water, 1 cup milk, 2 decaf teabags, 1/8 tsp ground cardomon, sweet and low... all boiled together...yum)
if you're freaked out about sweet and low you can do splenda...but I've been consuming sweet and low as long as I can remember.. and don't plan on changing!
I have not dumped yet. I have gotten food stuck lots of times though. I guess I am not too good at the chew chew chew thing. I have also eaten that one too many spoonful and gotten sick. So basically I throw up about once a day. Lucky me. I threw up all of the time prior to surgery because of my nasty gall bladder. Well they took out the gall bladder and what do you know...I am still praising the porcelin god.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I have been blessed and have not had too many uncomfortable situations since I have had the surgery on Oct. 14th. I did dump the first week after a teeny sip of a protien drink. My tummy wasn't ready! I have also thrown up once from eating something too fast and not chewing it well enough. Talk about PAIN! Wow.
I also have problems drinking water. I have a friend that had the surgery a year ago and said that that happens in some people...she gave the explination, but I don't remember exactly. Something abou****er reacting to the staples? Anyway - I drink a lot of crystal lite and it doesn't hurt my tummy as much. I have drank more water lately and it doesn't seem to hurt like it did a month ago.
I have found that milk is tough now...I used to be a HUGE milk drinker, but now it kind of bothers me...nothing serious, but just uncomfortable. For this reason, it is hard for me to do the protien drinks and water with those powders - FORGET IT!
I have tried a few restuarants...the other day I went to this wing place and wow did it make me feel crappy. I don't know what it was, but I didn't like the food much anyway so it was no loss.
There are some things that people say bother them...and they don't bother me...I can eat s/f ice cream, nuts (chew alot), popcorn (small quantities), and even salads. If it is bulky, it is gonna hurt going down unless it is chewed like crazy.
I am doing well with the program though! I have lost 50 pounds in 9 weeks! Wow!
