I sure could use some advice from toher WLS patients. In October 2000 I had WLS and had the DS procedure done. It worked wonderful but I have one haunting problem and that is GAS. I am so careful about what I eat and do fairly well most of the time but at times it is terrible. I have even had to quit my job because I am so embarrassed. Can anyone offer any help or advice!!! my e-mail address is [email protected] Thanks, Mary B.

Topic: 171 gone and shrinking again!
I am so excited! I stopped losing and actually gained about 15 pounds. Then I got on Weigh****chers 7 weeks ago and have lost 18 pounds in 7 weeks! It's an awesome program for our "type" because you can really eat anything, but you have to control the portions. As you all know we have a leg up on that part of it. Wish me luck!

Hi Kathleen, I am so sorry to hear you mother passed away. I hope someday you will find comfort. I am dealing with my mother who is ill with ALS (Lou Gehrigs disease) and like you I don't have food to turn to anymore as a comfort. It is hard. My husband and I have moved in with my parents to help my Dad care for her. Wow I can't believe they removed 16 pounds of skin! I had ten pounds removed last August. You must feel great! You have lost so much weight and you are an inspiration!! I know you will loose the last 85. I wish you continued success on your journey. Take care, Colleen

Topic: 85 more pounds to go...
Hi everyone, I just wanted to say that I have lost 215 lbs. I started my journey 10-19-00 weighing in at 475 lbs. I want to lose a total of 300 lbs. I know I can do it, but boy, it's sure tough, the last 85! Alot has happened since my surgery. Like life, for example. I truly have learned to deal with stress without turning to food. My mother passed away this past April 19th. She was my rock and I miss her terribly. I started smoking because the stress of her illness, cancer in her spinal cord in her neck, was at times, almost unbearable. I kept thinking about my mother, and the things I needed to do for her, and just the fact that she was helpless, gave me the strength to go on. She made me her durable power of attorney and executrix of her will the day before her surgery on Jan 23rd of this year. Being the youngest of seven children, the other siblings were split down the middle in their reaction. Needless to say, I have 3 brothers who backed me 100% and one brother and my only sister, not speaking to me. That's ok, because the decisions that were made were done democratically, majority rules. On to other things. I had a panniculectomy on May 1st 2002. I did have complications because I had to go in for a second procedure on June 6th to have a drain put in. Needless to say, my recovery time took 2 months solid. I feel great. My back doesn't hurt me like it use to. I sit at a computer everyday at work, so that doesn't help lower back pain, but not having a 16 pound (that's how much skin was removed) child on my lap, 24x7 helps tremendously. I would like to add my pictures to obesityhelp. I just need to contact the right people. If there's anyone out there that can steer me in the right direction, that would be of great service. Take care of yourselves. Hope to hear from someone really soon. Continuing the journey, one day at a time! Kathleen Barker Open RUY, October 19, 2000

Topic: I'm still Alive!
In August of 2000, I went to see my PCP, she told me if I didn't do something about my weight very soon, I wouldn't live to see my 35th birthday. Scary Stuff! I had the Duodenal Switch on October 6, 2000, and I just celebrated my 35th birthday. It is July 1, 2003. I have actually gained some weight back, but am working on losing it, old habits are returning, and I have trouble sticking to Doc's orders. (No eating between meals.) That was a problem before surgery, and still is. My life has done a complete 360, I was severly depressed, I never wanted to do anything, now I play baseball with my son, soccer with my daughter, all the yard work, and I actually enjoy it. My husband and I get along better than ever, we will be celebrating 15 yrs. of marriage in September and we are taking a trip to the Mayan Riviera to celebrate. I enjoy life again and every day I thank God I found myself again. I was 326.5 at my heaviest, and 179 at my lightest, I have put on 15-20 again, but am seriously working on getting back on track.

Hi Stepahanie, first of all, congrats on the 100# loss, I know you'd like more but I'm sure your quality of life has improved immensely! A thought about bm odor, I can't help with a reason, but I carry a book of matches w/ me all the time, strike a couple and the sulphur neutralizes the odor (most of the time Good luck! Christine

Topic: Hi everyone, it has been ...
Hi everyone, it has been a long time since I have posted a message. I'm sorry to say that my surgery did not go as well as others. I went into the hospital weighing 353. I now weigh 253 pounds. It took me about 4 months to loose 100 pounds. I have since stayed exactly the same weight. I haven't gained or lost any weight. It's good that I have not gained but I wished that I would have lost more weight then 100 pounds. Luckily, I am tall and my weight is proportioned well. One thing that I have not ever seen anyone address is a very embarrassing question that I have and I hope someone out there can give me some suggestions to help cure my problem. Does anyone know what to do about the very foul odor caused when I have a BM? Do other people have this problem? This is so humiliating and such a problem that, my boyfriend is actually putting a bathroom in the basement for me to use so that I won't stink up the rest of the house. I hate to go out in public, expecially visiting someones house, because the odor just lingers and won't go away for quite awhile. I've tried different sprays and have contacted the home health in our town but they had nothing to help me and none of the sprays that I have used seem to help much. Please answer back and let me know if others have this problem and what they do about it. Thank you.
