Topic: RE: Calling all post-op patients
i had a revision from lapband to RNY on 9/8.  I was shocked at how well i felt, and how quickly i'm recovering.  The lapband surgery was much harder.   This time around, i only required pain meds twice, and really the only reason I requested it was to have something help me relax to sleep.  I really had no pain, just tenderness!  And thank God, NO gas pains.  My surgery was at 3pm, and by 9 i was up walking in the halls.  Thats my best advise...get up and walk, walk, walk.  Follow all your dr's instructions to the tee once you get home.  You WILL be tempted as you cook for your family or smell food cooking, but you musn't deviate from the plan.    I'm now 12 days postop, feeling great, and starting pureed foods.
Wishing you the best for a speedy and safe recovery!   :)

Topic: RE: I'm not convinced my surgery worked anymore!
My doctor was adament about explaining how our new pouch is not healed until 3 weeks postop.  Eating ANYTHING prior to complete healing is just too risky.  He explained about temptations, as everyone will get them.  But he also explained what could happen IF we didnt follow our postop instructions to the tee.....the worst being a rupture of the suture line and the resulting peritonitis.    I'll tell ya, he scared the heck out of me enough to make me follow his instructions completely.   That said, I'm currently just beginning some pureed foods, and am enjoying applesauce, grits, cottage cheese, yogurt (especially the whipped type), and cream of wheat.  Who'd have thought those items would "feel" so good.  It's not so much the taste, it's the feel of being able to put a spoon to my mouth with something on it!
Bottom line:  PLEASE immediately start following your doctors instructions.   It's a hard road until we all start eating real food again, but this period will pass, and before long, we'll all be passing recipes back and forth for the real food.
Take care of your new self.

Topic: RE: Scheduled Surgeries

I have BC/BS of NJ. It took about 5 months. 1 month of that was waiting for COBRA to kick in. But  BC/BS requires 6 monthsof doctor supervised weightloss program....I had already been working on that and meeting with a nutritionist monthly, so I had that out of the way. It was just a lot of red tape and paperwork, letters from PCP, letter from nutritionist, etc. Finally, surgery scheduled for next week!

Topic: RE: PROTEIN
Hi,

My surgery is next week, but a got a few to try. Isopure is not bad, especially the melon flavor. I also got some of those protein bullets, opened one, smelled it, tasted it, almost hurled and tossed every one of them. The Isopure was much better. I got it at GNC.

Best of luck.

Wow! Please tell us about your liver. Why the scarring? Where do you go from here? What a bummer!

Topic: RE: Starting to get Nervous!!!!
My surgery is on the 22nd....just two days away and I'm sort of nervous. I just keep reading everything on this site hoping I'll be able to get through this.
Wish you luck and try to remember that even the first few pounds off will feel good.

I hear your frustration.  It took me two years to reach the weight goal for surgery approval.  I was finally scheduled for surgery on August 31.  When I went for my pre-admission screening, I was told I had to get a hematology clearance because they thought I might have von Willebrand's Disorder.  Long story short - I got the call from the hospital telling me when I had to arrive for surgery.  Hooray!  Then, 20 minutes later, I got a call from the hematologist saying he couldn't clear me because I do have von WIllebrands (a blood clotting disorder kinda similar to hemophilia).  Talk about devastated!  Well...I'm back on for Monday (9/21).  I've been cleared - responded well to the medication.  I think they probably saved my life since I could have hemorrhaged during surgery and they wouldn't have been prepared for it.  I've decided that all the setbacks are just confirmation that this is the route we really want to take.  Hang in there!

'Greetings,
I am right behind you with a surgery date of 9/14/09. I hear you about the protein issue. I would be fine if not for the diet. For breakfast and lunch, I get to take pills and a bite of applesauce. I am totally stuffed after that. Ugh. And then I just can't get much of the shakes down. I am just not hungry. Well, I am a RN, so I know what will happen if I do not get enough protein. My body will start breaking down my muscles to get enough protein, and I do not want that to happen. I just cannot afford any of the expensive bariatric specialty foods. It will be months before I get back up after coming up with my co-payment. Does anyone have any more suggestions?
