Home from the hospital. Surgery date was 9-9-09
Well I'm home and feeling great. The surgery went well; 40 minutes top. So far so good. This is my first full day home from the hospital so I have to rely on what I've learned to make it through this day. I read a thread prior to my surgery where this one lady kept posting, sip, walk...and something else under every message. That stuck in my head and I believe that's why I'm doing so well now.
I was walking the first day of surgery. Walking is KEY. In the hospital you will have an IV so if you can't drink a lot your first two days its ok. The medicine pump they give you after surgery helps to relieve the pain but it also makes you really dizzy. I preferred the liquid pain medicine better. Everytime you get a dose of pain medication get up and WALK. WALK, WALK, WALK. It helps relieve the pain.
My only complaint thus far is the GAS PAIN. OMG it's relentless. Water gives me gas. I can't tell if I'm full, in pain or have gas. I really didn't anticipate this at all but this too will pass. If there is no struggle there is no progress. I just thought I'd share with all of you who are about to undergo surgery. Good luck. Remember to sip and walk just like the lady said.

Welcome home!
I'm glad you are feeling good, hearing about your gas pain is one thing I'm not looking forward to. My surgery is Wednesday and I'm so worried about getting in my water. I'm so bad with drinking it now that I'm worried how i'll be after surgery.
I just keep thinking sip sip sip. walk walk walk.
Cant wait to hear how your progress is going

Thanks Chris. Yesterday I was able to get in 48 oz. That was a challenge for me and I LOVE drinking water. Before surgery I would drink over 64 oz a day. The hard part was sipping and fitting it all in with everything else, timing it right etc. No water 30 minutes before you eat, no water while eating, no water 30 minutes after eating. YIKES so many things to remember.
The good and the most amazing thing is....I'M ACTUALLY FULL with just 4 Tablespoons of food. AMAZING. I tried eating oatmeal today (the small packet) and I couldn't eat it all. I love it. Walking is the best thing ever. I walked around the block yesterday and the gas pain dissapated. I also tried laying on my left side with a pillow between my legs and that helped too. Today is the first day that I don't have any pains. I was able to sit up with no pain so I'm not taking my pain medication today. Oh that's another thing, I HAD TO drive 30 miles to find a pharmacy that carried the pain medication. I couldn't find one in my area that had it in stock.
I will keep you all posted. I know how excited you are. The day will come fast trust me. I can't believe i'm here. PLEASE if nothing else remember sip, sip, walk, walk.

Hi Karen,
I know exactly how you feel. If I can answer any questions for you I will be glad too. I'm so proud of myself for making this decision. These threads helped me to mentally prepare which is why I think I'm so positive despite the changes.
One thing I forgot to mention is I can feel my food as it moves down my throat to my stomach and then intestines. It's weird. I've never felt that before. It's like I can actually feel the path it's taking. Good luck.
