Steps after surgery?
I'm scheduled to have the lap band surgery on October 30. A friend's wife just had it done a couple of weeks ago and he suggested that I stay at my mother's place because of the steps in my home. He said his wife was holding on to the walls while she was walking after the surgery. Did anyone have problem going up and down steps after surgery. When I enter my home I go up a flight of steps to the second floor where livingroom kitchen and bathroom are and my bedroom is on the third floor. Does anyone forsee me having any problems going up and down the stairs. I really would like to stay at my own place but don't want to sleep on the couch either.
I think it all depends on your physical shape before surgeory. Make sure that you try and excercise now before surgery. I had no trouble at all going up the steps. I was able to sleep in my own bed without a lot of pillows. Good luck

I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND WHERE YOUR COMING FROM IN REGARD TO STYAING AT HOME AFTER SURGERY. I REFUSED TO SATY ANYWHERE BUT HOME AFTER SURGERY! LOL...I HAVE 16 STEPS TO GET TO MY APARTMENT. I HAD SURGERY ON SEPT. 25, 2008, STAYED IN THE HOSPITAL FOR 3 DAYS AND WALKED UP AND DOWN MY STEPS WITH NO PROBLEM. MY DOCTOR STATED TO ME THAT THE STEPS WOULD ONLY BE A ISSUE IF YOU USED THE RAILING TO PULL YOURSELF UP THE STEPS. THAT PULLS ON YOUR STOMACH WHICH COULD BE VERY PAINFUL. ONE STEP AT A TIME AND I BELIEVE YOU SHOULD BE FINE!
THE OTHER LADY IS RIGHT THOUGH...IT DEPENDS ON THE PERSON. IM 28 YEARS OLD AND FOUND THE SURGERY VERY VERY VERY EASY. EVEN THOUGH I HAD GASTRIC BYPASS, THE SURGICAL PAIN MAY BE SIMILAR. I AM GOING TO BE REALLY HONEST. THE ONLY THING THAT BOTHERED ME WAS THE DRAIN. BUT WHEN IT WAS REMOVED ON THE DAY THAT I WAS RELEASED HOME, THERE WAS NO MORE PAIN...IT WAS LIKE I DIDNT EVEN HAVE SURGERY. I DONT KNOW, CALL ME WEIRD....LOL

Sounds like your friend's wife had it pretty bad. Most people don't experience that much pain.
I had a sleeve which has a slightly longer recovery time than a band and I had a hiatal hernia repair which also adds to the recovery. And I didn't have it that bad!
I could walk around from the beginning, but sometimes I had to clutch around my waist on the right side because it felt like my insides were trying to escape. If I had had more pain or it covered a larger area, I would have walked around with a pillow clutched to my middle, like I did when I had open gallbladder surgery.
I could sleep in my bed if I had two pillows instead of one. I still need a second pillow once in a while at 2.5 weeks out.
I really used my painkillers though. I think that helps a lot. Whenever my insides started to feel "fragile", I would be sure to take some pain medicine so that I could do what I wanted/needed to do.
