Surgery scheduled for Sept 29, 2008. Nervous, but excited

Just found this forum. Working on updating my profile so stay tuned.

My surgery date is scheduled for Sept 29 and I am nervous!  Everyone keeps asking me "aren't you excited"???  I am, but I think I just read too many negative things online.  I know I have a good doctor, so that is comforting.  Anyone else feeling a tad nervous?

I have questions on the week before the surgery. I know I'm supposed to be on liquids, but do I start the vitamins then too?  Are there medications (Advil, etc) we aren't supposed to to take during that time before surgery?

Hi Renee!

That's my date, too!  I just started the liquids today, Medifast.  My Dr. told me only to take Tylenol if I had any aches and pains as it will not thin the blood or upset my stomach like the other painkillers will.  Also, be sure to check with his office if you're taking any prescribed painkillers as a lot of those are aspirin based.

My Dr. told me I could continue to take my scripts, Prevacid for GERD, Zoloft for depression, Advail and Albuterol for asthma.  Be careful what vitamins you take as some will also thin your blood, like vitamin E.  I'm taking a small dose of vitamin C. and a multi-vitamin.

Good Luck!
Doreen

Renee,
You must be just floating on air with your date coming up so quickly.  Good Luck and best wishes for an uneventful surgery and speedy recovery...It wouldn't hurt to start your vitamins that week but it's o.k, if you don't I was a tad nervous before my surgery but I think it was mostly anticipation of the unknown....sending positive vibes your way

Oh yeah, definitely anticipation of the unknown.  That's a lot of it.  I really need to figure out which vitamins to take and how much. My Dr told me but I don't have it in writing and I had a lot of info to process that day in the office.  lol  Thanks for the positive vibes!  I'll take those for sure!!  Have a great day!

Hey girl, you are going to do great! Here is the deal... you probably know this but I will say it anyway ... High protein liquid before surgery shrinks your liver so the stomach is easier to operate on laproscopically.  so no stress about the vits...if the doctor needed you to be on them, he or she would have prescribed them.   Your adherance to this liquid piece will make the surgery easier for you. I wouldn't stress about the advil, etc. because your doctor would advise you if you had to stay away from it. any doubt just call the doctor and ask.  Have faith in your doctor, and you will develop faith in yourself....i promise!  It's all good from here on out!  I am three years out Oct 10th and I have no regrets...so stop reading the on line crap, and watch for people who try and feed you wrong/bad infor to scare you off ... the surgery is the best tool I ever had to help me acheive weight loss and it can be your best tool too...

You are going to be successful~

Hi!!  Well, I knew that liquids the week before shrinks the liver so it's easier to operate on...didn't know the part about the high-protein liquids.  Have any suggestions for some good ones?

Does everyone take the same vitamins after the surgery?

I definitely have faith in my Dr....I just wish I had written some things down.  lol

3 years!!  Wow!  So no regrets?  That's great!!

I am doing this and putting everything I have into it.  I'm bound and determined to be successful.  Thank you so much for the pep talk.  I needed that.  :-)

Hey Yvonne!  How are you feeling?  Congrats on being 7 days out!

Yeah, I'm a single Mom so I'm terrified that something will happen.  That's my major concern, I guess.

Thank you for the kind words and advice.  :-)

Hi Renee~
My surgery is a week from today, and like you I am a bit nervous of the unknown, but very excited about what this will do for me.
I had my pre-op class yesterday and they gave a lot of info.  (All doctors are different, so you should check with yours for sure).
After surgery they want us to take a chewable complete vitamin and a chewable/liquid calcium citrate with D.  After a month, then the surgeon will add other vitamins that we may need.
I am on some medications that have to be switched to liquids (metformin for diabetes) and the like, so if you are on a lot of meds, you'll want to check on that as well.
Hope this helps, Good Luck to you and keep us posted!
Debbie
