The reason for the pre-op liquid diet is to shrink the fatty liver to make it easier for them to move the liver out of the way to get to the stomach (which is behind it). If the liver is very fatty, it's stiff and difficult to retract. By going very low fat, low carb, high protein for two weeks, the fat is reduced making the liver more pliable. I personally think it's also to help you begin to wrap your head around the changed portions and eating habits you'll have post-op, but that's just MY opinion. Susan

Topic: RE: Surgery concern, anyone else?
Hi Kristen, If you're having it done laparoscopically they might send you home with only one night, I suppose it depends on the doctor, with all the tests and evaluations they require I'm sure they wouldnt put you at a higher risk, when is your surgery scheduled? with my doctor its 2-3 nights if done by lap and 3-4 nights if open and he prefers to do open because he has a better view for checking to make sure everything else looks ok (ie:liver, lungs, pancreas) and the healing time is faster and risk of infection is lower, did your sister have the same doctor? check him out and ask questions, make sure he knows about your kidneys, the diabetes is one very good reason to have the surgery. Best of luck and I'll keep you in my prayers.

Congrats on your date Netti---!!! I have mine the 5th in Delano, Ca by Dr Keshishian. So far the only tips I could give you is to make sure you follow the doctors diet to the letter, and get all your daily protein and water in, it would be very easy to get dehydrated. Take care and keep me posted on your surgery. Best Wishes and Gook Luck Melody

How do you get the ticket measure tape on your blog? I like and have benefitted from others and want to do the same for others.

Topic: Surgery Date Sept.5th for my BPD/DS
Hi Everyone, Well I have one week and 5 days. I'm really excited to get this done, I have so many co-morbidities that I'm really looking forward to being healthy and being thin. I'm not really looking forward to the first few days and probably the first month or so, but I believe that with my Faith in God, a good Positive Attitude, compliance with the program and doctors and all of my support team I know everything will be ok. I still need to get an Angel, otherwise I'm doing pretty good. Any last minute suggestions for me, that I need to know? Thanks, Melody

My Doc does not require any liquid diet prior to surgery. I have to start liquids on the 10th and my surgery is the 12th. That is just for the prep of surgery...Why do other Doc's do a 2 week liquid diet?
