How fast should I be able to drink 16 ounces of liquid? I was told that I would only be able drink very slowly. It seems to me that I can drink 16-20 ounces of liquid in about 5 minutes. Is this fast or about what it should take?

Eric, You know I haven't really timed it, but what I have found is that I really have to make a conscious effort to take smaller sips, vs. my usual larger gulps ( as I now reflect). I notice this in 2 areas. 1. When drinking water I used to be a gulper especially when returning from a walk. 2. When drinking some of the protein shakes, I would drink them fast just to get them over with...........can't really do that now. SIGH. I am dealing with it, just something I have noticed. I am still on all full liquids for another week. looking forward to some chewing time. Had RNY on 9/25. Jackie

I was wondering the same thing. I can drink somewhere between 90-110oz of water a day with no problems. Of course Im not gulpping it down. But I sure can drink with ease. Its been like this for the past 2weeks, and I just had my surgery 3 weeks ago(9/11). I hope someone can answer this. -Mary

In what everything I have been taught and what I am presently doing is frequent small sips rather than infrequent gulps. Probably better on your belly and better absorbition. Amanda

I don't have any problem drinking the same way I always did. I haven't had a fill yet so I don't see any reason that fluid would be restricted. The liquid just goes right down into the lower stomach. In other words if the drain isn't clogged you can keep the faucet running without stopping up the sink.

Because you are able to drink that much, doesn't mean you should...The best analogy I got was imagine your pouch is now a funnel, you can put a lot of liquid in the wide opening, but then it slowly drains out the skinny end. If you are putting more in than can drain you may be risking stretching out your little pouch so early on. Remember, the nerves to tell you if you are full or not have been cut, so you may not be feeling the "I've had enough" sensation yet. My nut and surgeon said to get 8 to 10 ounces in every hour. This is just my opinion and please contact your team for their guidelines. Good luck. Holly

I highly doubt that drinking too fast will stretch out your pouch and do irreversable harm. If you drank to fast though and don't give each drink a chance to drain out of your pouch, then you may feel real nauseated and have it come back up. I was given no restrictions on how fast or how slow to drink liquids, only food was I told to take it slow, take small bites and chew them into oblivion before swallowing.

Heyyyy I was sip sip sipping the first 3 weeks or so. I have found lately I can drink a lot more when I haven't eaten in a while. I still don't guzzle, but I'm drinking a lot more than when I was first out.

I am a frequent sipper (approx. 3 sips per minutes) then I stop and give it a rest. and start again. I don't know if this is right but I have not gotten sick from it.
