Heart Rate after surgery

Hey...did you have any trouble getting your heart rate back to normal the first week, after doing tasks? It has been 4 days since surgery (last Friday)...and after doing fairly simple things today (taking a shower, walking to the kitchen, etc) my heart rate is up....and doesn't come down very fast. Did it take your heart a while to get back to pretty normal recovery rates? After showering.....my heart takes about 40 minutes to get it back to normal resting rate.

I had trouble after eating certain protein shakes. My heart would pound (I didn't actually take a heart rate, but it felt like it was pounding) for about 15 min. after eating it. At first we thought the shakes were too high in sugar, but they're not (like 4g carb, 2 g sugar), then thought it might be the caffeine in chocolate flavor, but that also only results in inconsistent heart-pounding. Once, when I ate tomato soup with a dollop of yogurt in it too fast, my heart pounded afterward, too. Still trying to figure it out.

I was glad to see this post as I have a concern about this myself. I had my surgery on 9/26/07 and the entire time I was in the hospital my heart rate would go crazy, setting off alarms and sending nurses running to get me back into bed and the rate reduced. This would happen just in getting out of bed, not to mention going to the restroom or anything else. They wouldn't let me shower the whole time I was hospitalized....then I came home alone, no monitors, no restrictions, no nothing. I'm a 57 year old woman and I have never had heart problems or anything prior to surgery. I feel pretty good overall at one week. I have started walking outside a couple of times a day and this seems to help, but I have more shortness of breath than I've ever had before and wonder if it is due to the increased heart rate or whatever. Guess I'll be checking this all out with my surgeon tomorrow when I go in for my follow up visit.

Hope you are doing well. I ended up in the hospital for blood clots in my lungs. :-0 SO....if you haven't gone to the doctor, and you are still having trouble breathing, and your resting (or active) heart rate is much higher than normal....go immediately to the emergency room. A quick test from them...and they can make sure you are fine. I am now back to normal...although I will have to have coumiden for 6 months (blood thinner). I am loving the lap band....less than 2 weeks to my first fill. This certainly makes me feel more like one of those little chicks that order a kids meal...and 'just can't eat anymore' when they are only half way through!!!!! Take good care of yourself!!!

My HR and BP went through the roof after surgery. I was even on BP meds (for the 1st time) in the hospital. My resting heart rate is still about 10 beats a minute higher than my normal, which has always been pretty high (85 BPM). So, I get dizzy if I do too much. I'm hoping it settles down so I can get the clear to exercise. I'll find out at my appointment Thurs.
