How much could you drink post-op?

I know I just posted my long story about how everything has been going.. But I'm just wondering how much everyone is/was able to eat a few days post op.. I'm on full liquids till my post-op next Monday. This morning I was able to drink 2.5 oz of my Protein shake in about 15 minutes. I don't know if this is too much or just right.. I still have not had a full feeling at all.. I just stop, so I don't over do it.. I'm just so worried that I have broke my staple line from my old stomach and that's why I'm able to drink that much.. I called my doctors nurse this morning and left a message for her to call me back so I can ask, but she still hasn't called me back.. I know everyone is different, but I just wanted to get a ball park from everyone.. Just to take a little ease off.. Thanks for you help ahead of time..

That doesn't sound too different from the amount I've been able to drink. I am finding that by sipping, I can get down around 8 ounces of liquid in an hour. Switching off between protein drinks and water, that means I am pretty much drinking something constantly to have a shot at reaching my goals of 70 g protein and 64 ounces of water each day. I would bet that if you had broken your staple line, it would hurt. Sounds like you're doing great! Zandra Q

Zandra, Thanks for posting back to me.. I think I was just doing some post-op worrying.. I did finally talk to the nurse at my doc's office and she reasured me that everything is okay and you are right if I broke my staple line I would know it.. so I felt much better.. I'm doing the same as you sipping constantly on protein or water. It's so crazy to not be hungry. I hope that your recovery & weight loss continues to go wonderful.. Glad to have a surgery sister..

It's funny, because just yesterday I made a mistake with my drinking. It was getting late in the day, and I was low on my protein. There was just a little bit (maybe 4-5 ounces) left in the bottle of one of my protein drinks. Instead of pouring it out and sipping away, I drank it pretty quickly. Obviously, with just 2 ounces of space in the pouch, this was not going to work. I didn't throw it up, but I will tell you that it hurt!! It didn't help that at the same time I am trying to wean myself off of the pain meds, so I hadn't had any in 8-9 hours. Of course, I couldn't swallow anything else at that point to take some, so I just had to lie down and wait it out for 15-20 minutes while it worked itself out. I guess the lesson here is that I haven't been able to retrain my brain yet about what is really a small amount of liquid. I don't think I'll be making that particular mistake again! April, I hope that everything is continuing to go well for you. Zandra Q

I started out a 24 oz the day after surgery, 32 oz the next two days, 48 oz the next day, 60 oz the next two days, and now 80 oz a day. I'm not allowed protein shakes. The protein levels I'm getting are low right now, but I'll be adding more protein as I begin eating more next week. Susan

I am 8 days out and I can pretty much gulp water and liquid now with no problems. I can get down an 8 oz protein shake in 10-15 minutes, that is probably too fast, but I don't have any bloating problems or anything, it just flows right through my pouch and into my intestine. The first few days I could only sip, but now it seems like normal drinking, as long as I don't chug it.

I can drink water pretty fast as long as it is room temp, if it is cold I can only sip it because it hurts. As for the protein shakes it takes me forever to drink one and I have never finished one at any one time because they get warm. I do make them with skim milk which makes the protein higher. I watched my swallow test the day after surgery and the barium just flowed right through. I guess that is how the water is also and that is why you can drink it so fast. It makes me wonder if the cold liquid makes the metal staples cold on your stomach and that is why it hurts to gulp it down.
