My sister had Gastric bypass 3 years ago and stayed in the hospital for 2-3 nights. Sinai Hospital in Baltimore is telling me it is only one night now. That is scaring me. I am worried about going home the next day after this kind of surgery. Anyone else staying only one night? I have diabetes and only one Kindney. Tell me what you think or make my mind at ease. Thanks Kristen from Glen Burnie Maryland

I'm sure if your doctors/surgeon knows about your diabetes, and kidney, they wont release you until they feel you are well enough to go home. They wont just kick you out! Maybe only one night is what you need. There are people I know that have gotten released after one night - having laproscopic. If you have open then they will keep you longer for sure. You'll be fine, and let your surgeon, and nurses know your concerns.. they are there to help you.

Kris, What they told you is just blanket policy. What you do is tell your Doc you're not ready to go home & why or he/she may just figure it out all by themselves. They then call your insurer & get permission. No big deal. Boy, hospitals (insurers, actually) sure don't want you there long, do they? Islander

The Doctors will not let you go unless you are ready to be released. I think this is more then likely the policy they use if all is well and things are normal. I myself have been told that my stay will be a 2 night stay but they also told me that with my diabetes and sleep apnea it might be longer. It will depend upon you and the way you respond. I will have you in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Kristen, If you're having it done laparoscopically they might send you home with only one night, I suppose it depends on the doctor, with all the tests and evaluations they require I'm sure they wouldnt put you at a higher risk, when is your surgery scheduled? with my doctor its 2-3 nights if done by lap and 3-4 nights if open and he prefers to do open because he has a better view for checking to make sure everything else looks ok (ie:liver, lungs, pancreas) and the healing time is faster and risk of infection is lower, did your sister have the same doctor? check him out and ask questions, make sure he knows about your kidneys, the diabetes is one very good reason to have the surgery. Best of luck and I'll keep you in my prayers.

I only stayed one night. When I got home I just took my pain meds every 4 hours whether I hurt or not for the first 36 hours or so them I went down every 8 hours until I needed nothig. You will be tired and the pain meds made me sleep. Sleep is a good healer for the body. I am also diabetic. My blood sugars were in the 240's the day of surgery. I am happy to say I have had no insulin since my surgery. Today the sugars are in the 120-130's. I am also off all BP meds. YOu are going to do good. I honestly hated to leave the hospital because they treated me so good!!! But you do rest better at home. And don't be afraid to jump on here and ask if you aren't sure about something. We are all here to help each other. Just remember to walk as much as you can when you come home. I walked around my house. I also went to walmart and bought a measuring glass (looks like shot glass). It held 5 oz and that helped me with my protein. I wasn't overwhelmed by the big glass wondering how I was ever going to drink all of that.LOL
