Topic: RE: Dumping Syndrome
My advice would be if it makes you dump avoid it , there has to be a reason your body is rejecting it. Don't try to mask it with pills or other things it will still happen.
Late dumping...
....has to do with the blood sugar level. The small bowel is very
effective in absorbing sugar, so that the rapid absorption of a
relatively small amount of sugar can cause the glucose level in the
blood to "spike" upward. The pancreas responds to this glucose
challenge by "cranking up" its output of insulin. Unfortunately, the
sugar that started the whole cycle was such a small amount that it
does not sustain the increase in blood glucose, which tends to fall
back down at about the time the insulin surge really gets going.
These factors combine to produce hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
which causes the individual to feel weak, sleepy, and profoundly
fatigued.
Late dumping is the mechanism by which sugar intake can create low
blood sugar, and it is also a way for gastric bypass patients to get
into a vicious cycle of eating. If the patient takes in sugar or a
food that is closely related to sugar (simple carbohydrates like
rice, pasta, potatoes) they will experience some degree of
hypoglycemia in the hour or two after eating. The hypoglycemia
stimulates appetite, and it's easy to see where that is going....
The reason that sugar does not cause dumping in non-operated people
is that the stomach, pancreas, and liver work together to prepare
nutrients (or sugar) before they reach the small intestine for
absorption. The stomach serves as a reservoir that releases food
downstream only at a controlled rate, avoiding sudden large influxes
of sugar that can occur after a Roux-en-Y. The released food is also
mixed with stomach acid, bile, and pancreatic juice to control the
chemical makeup of the stuff that goes downstream and avoid all the
effects outlined above

Yes most everything changes...hay you can eat again right...lol
and NO your NOT done !
Now is the time to reflect and make changes and step things up again.
Think about what you were taking in 6 months ago, not much need to work the body to get rid of it again, now most everyone should be back on food again and you will have to adjust for it.
*Add 8 more oz of water a day and 10-15 more min of activity a day (even if it's just a walk around the block)
*go over your eating plan, anything sneaking in that shouldn't be? extra carbs, easy food, salt, less water, soda?
I had surgery in Sept 05 and was losing up until I got pregnant , some of the group reached goal, some other got to within 20 lbs of goal and thought they were done but then lost more later on.
Each person is different and will lose differently but no your not done till you give up and accept being done.
Good Luck and stay focused!

Topic: RE: Any Runners Out There?
I was a runner in my college days and the first half of my 20's. I started running again about a month ago and things have been going well. I am working up to running, non-stop for 20 minutes, then I will set a new goal. I get in extra fluids on the days I run, as well as the day after. I have a problem with dehydrating very quickly and then having black outs. I also do a protein shake or bar after working out and eat a light meal about an hour or so before running.
As far as working up to running a distance....start slow and do intervals of walking and a light jog. I push myself as far as I can go, then go to a fast walk while checking my pluse. I walk for 30 seconds to a minute and then run again for 1 to 3 minutes. After the 20 minutes of intervals (I am up to 13 minutes of running with in 20 minutes), I will either do another 10-15 minutes of walking at a steep incline on the treadmill (I set the incline high, then bring it down a 1/2 setting every 30 seconds or a whole setting every minute until its time to cool down). Sometimes I will warm up before running on the eliptical for 20 to 30 minutes, or on the day I don't run, I will do 50 to 65 minutes on the eliptical. Also, weight training is important. I do a whole body weight training workout 2 to 3 times per week which usually takes me 45 to 60 minutes. Start with whatever works for you. You don't want to push too hard, but you do want to push hard enough to challenge yourself. You may also want to work with a personal trainer to get you started on a program.
Make sure you warm up and cool down and really do some good stretching afterwards. And...enjoy yourself!!
Have fun running!!

Topic: RE: Iron
Yep. I am having problems with Iron, too. I was told to double my iron supplement and also added a chewable prenatal vitamin with minerals to my vitamin regimen every day. That might be something to look into. I go in for a check in another 3 months to see what it is doing. Hopefully, it will be up! Here's hoping. Good luck to you! Let me know how things turn out for you. I heard that if it gets too low and they can't get it up, they put you on injections or periodic IV. Somehow, they'll get it in us!
Topic: RE: Finally!
Patti, you had the Lap Band as opposed to the RNY. If Michelle had the RNY, that would definatly answer your question. In my research, the lap band was more so recommended for folks who didn't have huge ammounts to loose since you only have that 1-2 year time frame. I was all for the lap band until I did my research-I began at 312lbs and it just wasn't going to get me down to an ideal weight in a year's time.
Topic: RE: Soooo Frustrated
Hey Christine, I have also been there, I am 7 months out and about 6lbs away from the 100 mark! I go through a bit of that every month, I drop a few lbs in a week then sit like a duck for like 2 weeks, somehow it picks up right at the end of the month! It's like my body knows 'she's gonna blow a gasket if we don't pick up the pace!' I concur with the other ladies, you definatly need to start getting into the habit of hibitual exercise... you think it's rough now.. this is how it will be from here on out- MAJORLY dependent on exercise. The weight loss slows and if your not doing your part it will stay slow or constant. I see that now if I decide to skip the gym-granted the scale doesn't go up but it's the honeymoon phase, milk it for all it's worth sister! Good Luck!

I've just started running and I'm 7 months post op. It hasn't been terribly hard - I try to make sure I'm extra hydrated on the days I run, and I try to run within an hour of eating something small, like a protein bar. It's gone fine for me so far. Good luck to you.
Topic: RE: Soooo Frustrated
Wow, Karen...WTG!! That sounds great but I'm already up at 5. Maybe I'll have to give up one of my jobs in favor of going to the gym. Some nights I don't get home until 7 and they're all closed then. I live in a pretty rural area.
I guess it's time to get religious about my workout dvd's. Summer will be better. Most of my piano students take the summer off and I will have much more time then.
Thanks for responding!
