Hello all! I had open RNY on Sept 25th, and I am wondering if I am eating too much, if that is even possible. I feel like my helpings are larger than other people told me they would be, but yet, I have never gotten sick. Is this possible?? For example, at dinner, I am eating a small square of meat, a cup of mashed potatoes, and then maybe a half-cup of steamed veggies. I don't really feel stuffed, but I stop because I get nervous about throwing up. Is there anyone experiencing this? Another example: for breakfast, I had 3 eggs (scrambled up) with cheddar cheese on it and a piece of toast. I was full, but not getting that "stuffed" feeling. I was tld that when you eat, you will get that "stuffed" feeling and that's when you should stop. I just don't know. I never really feel hungry, just more or less making sure I get my protein and water in. But then, when I am eating, my old habits of "eating because it tastes good" kick in. If anyone can relate, please give me a shout. Take care~~ Anne

Anne, I'm no Dr. but it seems a bit much... Are you loosing weight? and what does your surgeon say? I had my RNY on the 19th and I'll have just 1 egg for breakfast w/some cheese. Lunch & Dinner I'll weigh my protein and limit my total to about 3oz. It's really important to focus on protein and limit your carbs, take your vitamins to balance what you are not getting in from food... Do not eat till you're full (stuffed), as a newbie this feeling may take months to realize as many posts here on OH have indicated. I'm sure your Dr. or Nut have given you guidelines to follow, if not get some ASAP... & keep up your water intake, very important!!! Good luck, Art

I don't know what your surgeon has said, but yes, that seems like a bit much. 3 eggs is alot. At this point you should only be eating maybe a half of an egg. I was taught that you never eat till you are at that "stuffed" point. That means you are eating too much. I have had that feeling once and it is not very comfortable. Just eat until you start to feel satisfied. Like everyone else asked...are you loosing any weight? What is your program like? I had surgery on the 27th and am yet on solid food. Its so strange how everyone's program is different!

Hi Anne - congrats on your surgery -- but YES I agree, it sounds like you are eating too much! Have a look at your "Barix Bible" in the "eating to heal" & "eating for living" sections. They outline what would be a typical daily intake (along with sample menus), including protein+ counts for each food group & what quantity this is. Most importantly - don't forget to contact your Barix dietician for any of these questions -- they will call you back quickly & get to the heart of your needs. I am just 8 wks out tomorrow ... at my main meals, I am eating max 1/2 - 3/4 cup of food. I only just started having a bit of carb (1/2 English muffin) ... though I have been eating oatmeal or 1/2c cornflakes for breakfast for about 2 wks. At your stage still in healing, it is unlikely that your little pouchie can tell you that its full ... it is still swollen & mending. That is why the dieticians say - measure/weigh your foods for now, so as not to overdo it. I haven't had the guts to try eggs yet ... I loved them pre-op, & don't want to find out that I cannot tolerate them. (I already have had to cut tuna fish & chicken off my list for a while due to / dry heaves ... thank god for cheese & chili !!) I find that only in the last few days, am I feeling my pouchie trying tell me I am full. Many people throw up if they eat too much .. I haven't had that happen to me but I haven't pushed that limit. The other suggestion I'd make ... protein first, then veggies .. only then the potatoes. This gives you the nutritional stuff first. Especially since you appear to be tolerating meat already. At 4 wks post-op, you would still be in the pureed food stage (wk 4-5) ... moving to soft foods at 6 wks. Have you accelerated this? Anyhow - hope that gives you some ideas. Good luck! ttfn - ElizH

Anne, I agree with the others that you are eating too much. I can sometimes eat a whole egg, most of the time it's just half. Can only eat 1 or 2 bites of any kind of meat, same with veggies. During the entire day I can only get down and retain maybe 10 bites of food total throughout the day. I do 1 or 2 protein shakes a day and other liquids. I'm on my 6th week post-op. Have you been losing weight? Hugs, Donna
