OK everyone, I am 12 days post op and I can't seem to get enough water down. Maybe that is why I have only lost 10 lbs since surgery. I am reading so many posts from people 21 days post op who have lost 25 pounds, it is driving me nuts. I am only getting maybe 800 calories total per day with all this pureed stuff. I finally caved in tonight and made some refried beans and had just under 1/2 cup. I drank water with it because it made me so thirsty. I am finding that I need to drink with almost everything. I finally started drinking vegetable juice because I figured it would cure the thirst and fill me up. I have had some gas pains in my shoulder and back on and off and I am afraid that might be from the protein drinks, but I need my protein. If anyone can give me any ideas I would appreciate it! Thanks, Patti

Dear Patti, The shoulder/back pain is probably gas. Walking really will help, but I remember how I felt at 12 days, and walking was not on my short list of favorite things to do! I had problems with water intake also. My saving grace was a feeding tube that was put in during surgery,(kind of an insurance policy), to use when I couldn't meet my goals of protien and water. In fact, I just had it out yesterday. NOT the most pleasant experience, but lasted only 20 secs! Things will get better, just keep taking your pain meds and rest as much as possible. The 10 lbs since surgery is normal because of all the fliud pumped in you in the hosp. It will pick up! Good luck and stay off the scale!

Water, broth, decaf tea, decaf coffee, popcicles, crystal lite, fat free milk...All of these count twards your liquid intake,at least for me they did. I tried to take in one ounce every 10 min , that would give me 6 oz an hour sometimes I made it sometimes I didn't. It's hard in the first couple months to get in everything you should in the same day, As long as it avrages out over the week don't let yourself stress to much. If your going to drink the veggie juice try to get the low sodium kind, sodium is a killer when it comes to holding on to water weight. Shel

When I am in front of the TV at night I play this game. Every 3 min I take 3 sips of water. I watch the clock and do it like a chalenge. I find that after an hour so I have drinken a bottle of water. It helps for me if the water is ice cold , it goes down easier. But I am now gettting enough water. 800 cals seems like a lot of cals to me. My nut says no more than 600.

Someone suggested I try a sippy cup to drink my liquids and it really does work. I am now able to get more in than I was a couple of weeks ago. And so far no one has made fun of me using a sippy cup
