My doctor said protien can wait...??
Hi all...I am one week post op (9/8/06). When I discharged on Monday, I asked my doctor about protien and what to have. He said not to worry about it for now, but to just have pureed/soft foods. I have some protien in cottage cheese, peanut butter, and scrambled eggs, but I'm eating 3-4 times a day, and about 1/4-1/2 cup at a time. I eat very slowly, waiting a couple of minutes between bites. I go back for a recheck at 2 weeks, so he may redo my diet then, but I haven't had any upset or anything. Is this normal???
I'm sure every surgeon does things a bit different, but I have to admit I'm surprised that you weren't set up with a nutritionist who is familiar with gastric bypass surgery.
My surgeon requires that you have a meeting with one BEFORE the surgery.
You also meet with his nurse for guidelines on the entire process including dietary. Then to make sure you get it, they issue a 3 ring binder with everything starting pre-surgery and going through to the ongoing maintenance phases.
Its really a great resource and I wish all surgeon's did something similar.
My surgery was Tuesday 9/12 and Posner in Buffalo has me on only liquids and it should include protein. I am drinking diluted Isopure flavored protein drinks, no carbs no sugar. It is hard to get all that I need - 50-60 g of protein is the goal. They said that the protein will help the healing process. I have also read that other places. Good luck, it does seem like each doc does things differently. Susie
