PRE-OP WEIGHT LOSS????????????
Hey ladies and gents,
I need some help here, I think I am having a panic attack. My surgery is the 14th and my doctor has told me that if I don't lose at least 8 lbs he won't do the surgery on me. Anyone heard of this before. He's really sweet and compassionate, its just I am freaking out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CAN A PERSON LOSE 8 LBS-10LBS in 8 days????????
Stephanie,
I don't like doctors that do that to us... I think it's really wrong of them... however having said that, it may be his way of making sure you do the preop diet to the "T". I've been doing my best to stick to protein drink, chicken broth (fat free) and sugar free jello for the last 7 days...(I cheated a bit and had chick salad and regular salad a few time when I was starvin). I've lost 5 lbs in 5 days (my surgery is tomorrow). I'm sure if you stick to it, that's certainly possible but it's NOT easy.
Put your mind to it, I'm sure you can do it... once your through surgery, you'll be eating same foods for a while.
Good luck!!

I had to do a 800 cal diet for 2 weeks........It was hard the first day. I got a 1 cup measuring cup and measured everything. I was told to chew my food 20-25 times so I will be used to chewing my food good. I didnt really ecercise but I lost 16 pounds in 6 days. You feel real full. They want you to lose a little so your liver will shrink. It makes the surgery easier. I feel the DR should have given you more time. Good luck. You can do it.

THanks girlfriend!!! I got on the scale we have here at work and it said I had already lost 4 pounds. I didn't believe it so I stopped by my doctor's office on the way home from work and I LOST 4 POUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have 6 more days for me to lose the minimum but I KNOW I can do this. It sure has helped though with everyone from the website rooting for me!!!!!!!
Are you getting nervous about your surgery? I am but onyl because I hate protein drinks and I KNOW they will be a part of me for sometime! LOLOL just kidding. I am nervous because I handle everything in my house so I don't know how they are all going to do it with me incapacitated. Ah well that's another post I suppose. BUT YEAH FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are going to have to stay in touch so that we will know how the other one did!
My surgery clinic recommended a protein drink for breakfast, one for lunch, and a Lean Cuisine or the like for dinner. The reason is to shrink your liver so that your surgery is easier. It's so worth it to get a jump start on your healthier way of living. I just bought a big bag of protein drink at Costco, called Pro-Rated. I bought the Chocolate Bavarian flavored, and it's really quite delicious.
Stephanie,
I had been on a 1000 calorie liquid diet for 3 weeks and lost 17 lbs by my Dr.'s scale. My home scale said 20 lbs. As of today, I am going into week 4 and I have lost 30 lbs by my home scale. I felt my surgeon put me on a liquid diet to shrink my liver and also to see if I would be compliant with the diet. Hang it there!!!!!!

Just to let everyone know that by last Friday I lost 4 pounds so I guess I am getting closer. I jumped off the protein shakes on Sunday but I am back on them of course. Now I didn't go crazy but I didn'****ch everything either. I feel like a semi-failure, but hopefully I can pull it back up. I KNOW I can I have been waiting for this moment too long. THanks for th suggestions and support, I included some of your snack ideas like PICKLES! Hugs and thanks again,
Stephy
I have been on the pre-op diet almost the 10 days now, with surgery tomorrow. I have lost about 8 pounds. The key is to not cheat. I only cheated once, with a bowl of cream soup, because I thought these were OK, but they are not. Stick to clear liquids only and you should be able to lose the weight the doctor wants you to. Good luck! You can do it!
I followed the Dr's diet to the "T". I lost 25 lbs from 6/14/06 to 9/8/06. Portein shake for breakfast, protein shake for lunch, break one protein bar in half for two snacks. Dinner is 4-6oz of protein and all the vegetables you can eat. My usual faire was a large salad with cottage cheese, fruit, turkey, carrots, and dressing, make it as big as you want. Another substitue was a spinach omlete, with cheese, also very good. It worked for me.
