Hey linda what is your waist size I was watching OPRAH the other day and this dr came on and said that womens waist to be healty should be under 32 and men should be under 40 he said instead of focusing on weight numbers focus on size of your waist and that is a way to determine health also. How tall are you? I am 5"7 and 182 now that I have gained 10 lbs but people tell me if I lose anymore I would look sick but I want to at least lose another 20 lbs if not 30

Linda I so feel your frustration. I too am over weight according to my bmi. One of the ways the scale at my surgeons office measures is by body fat. My body fat components are right in line with where I should be. I still want to lose, because I would like to maintain at 150-155 and I am very aware of bounce back weight. I have a male friend that I work with. A few years ago I remember him telling me that his Dr. said that he needed to loose a lot of weight. He is 6' 2 " tall and over 50 years old. His Dr. had him go down to 195 lbs from about 225. I was shocked at how terrible he looked. At that time I realized that this BMI thing and the "right weight" for some was very subjective. One of the replies has a web site that will tell you what your average weight is to the rest of the world. I was thrilled to learn that I am about 17 pounds lighter than the average 43 year old woman.... that works for me. find what makes you happy. I think a lot of us have a primary goal that we think that we are happy with and then will drop it down once we get there. I know when I first started this whole process the thought of getting to size 16 thrilled me. I knew that I would be happy with that.... lol.... now I wouldn't dream of getting to 14. I say I am a size 12, I wear a 10-12 but mostly 12's. Until I am in an 8-10 I won't say I am a 10. remember above all be happy.... You have done a great job donna

Topic: RE: Snacking
Careful Careful! Stop it now because I am up 10 lbs and its harder to stop the snacking so get control of your emotions now before its too late. I have been fighting it for because I am stressed, it creeps up on you and before you know it you are out of control. Get those 100 calories snacks if you have to to control the portions, stay away from the chips and eat pretzels, my doctor said I don't even eat chips. Hope this helps.

I did finally get down to a normal BMI...Want to know where the weight came from? MY Boobs. The difference between 175 and 167 for me was almost nothing in waist but 2 cup sizes in bust. So normal BMI isn't all it's cracked up to be.

BMI is just a rule of thumb......it's useful in accessing a degree of overweight or underweight as long as other factors are taken into account. Keep in mind that: Arnold Schwartzenager and Tom Cruise are "obese" if you go only by BMI. EVERY Bariatric surgeon I have met has a BMI higher than 25. As people who have been MO, we have heavier bones, and excess skin that aren't included in the BMI Calculator. Health is the most important thing, and that's something only you & your bloodwork can truly assess.

Linda, I so get it. I cannot believe the BMI is a good indicator of HEALTH and my nutritionist agrees. There is apparently a "new" measure for what is healthy: Hips to waist ratio which is "supposed" to determine( according to the "professsionals") how healthy you are. I like this one better because according to this measure, I am healthy at 160. The BMI has me about 15 pounds overweight!! Try googling hips to waist ratio and you will find a website that will help you figure out how to do this and see how "healthy" you are according to this measure. I agree with Donna Mae though, it really is about how you FEEL not the number on a scale or even the hips to waist ratio crap. I have decided to accept that I will be a little overweight but healthier than MOST adults my age: 44, No medication except vitamins and able to run 4 miles a day, eating a healthy diet and active!! What more can one want in life!! Believe me, I understand the importance of the BMI and despite loosing 115 pounds still have what I call "FAT DAYS" when I feel like I never lost an ounce. Keep your Chin up and appreciate all you have done for yourself and CONGRATULATIONS on your success. HUGS, jacqueline
