Why NO protein supplements allowed?
I would love to know why some Dr's (though few I believe) would not recommend, nor allow there patients to use protein supplements?
It just sounds crazy to me.
I personally have only read good things about shakes and how much better are bodies absorb them comparied to eating foods that are high in protein.
This is one of the best websites, besides this one , that I have found:
Here is an exerpt from (put the www. in) headbattles.com
The one thing that makes one cringe the most like nails on a chalk board is when it is heard by a bariatric patient telling another that they have consumed x amount of proteins already today and they only need x amount more to get to their goal of 30 or what ever their goal may be for total and not really understand that not all proteins are not created equal especially for bariatric post operatives and our malabsorption and by pass and that we need a lot more. Also that pre digested shakes are easier on our bodies for benefits and absorption than food protein sources.
In other words a normal person will ingest a high quality whey protein shake and will excrete most of it because their body jumps back and screams, "What the heck am I suppose to do with something that is already pre digested for me?" Our post operative bodies however say, "Thank you because all that protein from food was not helping you as much as food should for your protein needs and this pre digest high quality shake will give you more benefits than food will because I cannot properly break it down to the extent that you can use it. AHHHH!" Got it?

(please check this paper out , it's very informative)
The average*** person (the "normal", NON-gastric bypass patient) needs 50-65 grams*** of protein each day. Considering malabsorption of at least 50%**, the RNY patient will need 100-140 grams per day minimum, which cannot be eaten as food because of the small size of the pouch.
Hope this helps someone out there.

It's true, believe it or not, there are quite a few, you might wanna check out the post "Am I A FREAK" (posted on Sunday)
It got many responses and was very suprised by how many people did not do protein supplements.
Shocked me!
I say.
To each it's own, I wish them all the best.
See ya around,

I'm with you, Lil' Red. I'm a fan of headbattles.com, too because it's so darn informative and gives some great links. There are sooo many conflicting opinions about protein, it's very confusing! My doctor & nutritionist told me that it's important to get in my protein through drinks, as well, but everyone is different. I DEFINITELY need to follow their advice. I'm baaad at it. I may get in one drink a day (20 g.) but I eat just fine. So, who knows for SURE? Gina from headbattles sure knows her stuff though don't she? She's had so much education in this, that I feel like I can believe what she says to be true. Oh well, I wish you good luck in your journey and we'll cross our fingers that muscle wasting isn't in the cards for us!
I personally think Gina is the BOMB!
She is MY insperation actually.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed too, even though I make sure I get at least 90 grams in a day.
3 shakes... 1.1/3 scoops each = 30 grams each.... 3x's a day.
It's usually the first thing and the last thing I have each day.
I haven't lost any hair either (not yet anyway)
I hope Gina was right about this one, as my hair goes well
past the ol' buttocks!
Take care of yourself, cuz noboby else can!

My favorite is Unjury Unflavorerd, I mix it with Crystal Light, it runs me around 36.00 for two containers 30 scoops(total for both containers)
20 grams of protein a piece, and it lasts me about 2 weeks taking in about 2 scoops a day. VERY expensive! (and only 40 grams of protein)
But that was the only thing I could handle at first, as it was SO easy to get down.
Now I drink alot of WHEY PROTIEN chocolate from GNC, it took a little getting used-to, but now I really like it, and it is MUCH cheeper. It's about 36.00 but has approx. 72 scoops at 22 grams of protein a piece.
I drink at least 3 shakes a day, and put in 1 and 1/3 scoops in each shake making it about 30 grams (all your body can digest at a time anyways) and then I get in my 90 grams a day, as what I was told to try to do if I could.
I did alot of research asking people the same thing, and I know that peoples tastes are all different , so I just went with what MOST people reccomended.
The majority weren't wrong either; as I've tried samples of others that only a few other people reccomened and ....yuck!
I will say it did take me a few days (at the most) to get used to drinking it and the taste, but I forced myself to do it ;for my health, which is the utmost importance. RIGHT?!
I really hope I could help you out, and I wish you the best of health.

I like the Dymatize Elite shakes that are available on www.bariatriceating.com ... they taste good, settle the sweets craving, and are cheap .. about 16.00 for a large container. 1 scoop=23 protein, 2.5 carbs. When I order online, it is usually here within a few days. Hope this helps!

My friends doctor says no supplamets after 6 months... his reasoning is her wants her to get all her protin from food, thus having to learn to eat correctly without relaying on supplaments. Im not too sure I agree with this idea at all.. btu I did what to offer that info up...
