Anyone drinking small amt of pop/soda?
Just wondering if anyone has tried drinking Diet, caffeine free pop in small doses? Don't flame me, I know it's not the best choice but I don't drink coffee or anything else bu****er. I've had about 4 oz a few different times and seem fine with it. I leave the cap loose on the 2 lt. bottle so it'll lose some of it's carbonation.
Yes I have. My doctor told me I could drink 1 d/c a week so I take a little from the bottle and refrige the rest. We have to have something different or we would go nuts. Why would you "get" flamed?? Nobody can tell you what you can and can't have ( except you doctor and yourself). I find it very refreshing to a little something new.
I used to drink coffee before surgery, I am lucky to get a half a mug down anymore ( my favorite was cappucinno's(sp)) but we all know way to much sugar in those bad boys.

Many surgeons, including mine, will publish in their "bible" (instructions) that you shouldn't have pop for 6 months. But there has been things that I have questioned and they'll say "if you can tolerate it". I was a die hard fountain diet coke addict, usually 2 44oz big gulps a day so I think 4 oz every few days isn't going to kill me. On our surgeons messageboard the members will give you a lecture if you do anything slightly wrong and I can't stand it. I am good 95% of the time....is every morsel of food I put in my mouth the best choice - no not always but most of the time. I've also had a couple alcoholic drinks at a party and it didn't even affect me, it was weird....everyone said you'd be a cheap drunk. I didn't pu**** just 2 drinks but I expected to be buzzed and I wasn't.
All I can say is that if we punish ourselves and not "indulge" every once in a while than what would be the purpose of the surgery. Seeing how if we are craving something ( with me a little dab does me anymore, just to get the taste and the crave is over) we need to give our bodies what they want ( just a tiny amount). I was told by both my PCP and surgeon that we had to change the way we eat and excersise but both said give yourself 2x a month to enjoy a "free meal". I have found that it is much easier this way than saying " I used to eat this, but...."
Like I said before I take 1 soda and it lasts me a week, it gives me a little variety and so far my body can handle it. I do have to say that the carbonation gets to me, I have to sip not gulp so its all good.
As a matter of fact, I just ate a tootsie roll. So as you can see it does not hurt anything every once in a while. I cant remember if I had said how much I had lost but it has been 62 pounds since 9/22/05. So apparently I am doing something right.
I really liked your email it gave me more insight on what I had been thinking. So in a way we both inspired eachother.
Keep up the good work,

I couldn't agree with you more. And I have found a tootsie roll once in a while is a great treat. I take my vits daily, work out, protein first, etc etc and if I want to drink 4 oz caffeine free diet soda with most of the carbonation out of it, I don't see any harm. I have to sip everything so I'm not overloading my pouch and you would have to drink a lot fast to have enough force for carbonation to stretch out your pouch. We have to keep things in perspective. Yes I ate apple pie at Thanksgiving, 2 bites after I ate my turkey and other good choices. If we completely deprive ourselves, I think you're more prone to depression. I also believe if you learn moderation now you'll be less likely to over indulge after you've reached goal. Think about it, on all the other diets we tried over the years we would deprive ourselves only to fall off the wagon and over indulge packing on even more weight. I agree that some people shouldn't take my approach as they don't know how to do "a little". For me, a bite or two or drink or two, is just enough to curb the craving and satisfy me. You've lost so much in such a short time! How much did you weigh to start? I have 135-140 to lose and I've lost 44. My BMI was just over 40, I'm fairly tall at 5'9".
I was so addicted to soda pre-op. When I stopped drinking it completly, the addiction started to fade. I've tasted my kids drinks...and the taste is different...STRONG...and too sweet to me now.
For Thanksgiving my family drank the apple cyder which is carbonated. I tasted that a few times...I didn't like how it felt going down...and I said to myself...I've gone without soda now for so long that I shouldn't start again because I will just become addicted to it.
The surgeon told me that we shouldn't drink ANYTHING carbonated because the carbonation stretches the pouch...
I think we should avoid it....find other drinks that satisfy you.
I enjoy decaf/sugar free general foods suisse mocha coffee drink mix...but I think the fat content is a bit high..(30 calories/20 fat calories)
Also, decaf tea with equal is good.
And I enjoy mixing the crystal light ...lemonade and rasberry mixed is good...I fill my 34 ounce cup with water and pour in a ready pack of each...
I don't know about you guys but bad habits die hard with me...so once I've let it go...I just don't want to go back to it.

I was craving some Pepsi the other day, so I took one sip from DH's glass...He's the one that gave me the lecture! I think we need to "give in" to the cravings once in a while...
I do worry that the carbination will stretch my pouch...so, I avoid it. Just that one taste was enough for me. I wasn't a big soda drinker pre op.

Thanks for bringing this up - its a big issue for me too! I was a HUGE coke addict (the diet kind!) pre-surg, and weaned myself off it for WEEKS just prior and after surgery. Now I have part of one once or twice a week cuz I'm craving the taste. Tummy doesn't like it too much, so I don't drink more than a couple ounces (and yes, letting the carbonation dissolve is good too!).
Bottom line is, I REFUSE to make a distinction of 'good food/bad food' (or drinks, in this case). Diets and deprivation made me crazy.... and fat!... so i give my body what it wants, in SMALL amounts, and I'm happier for it! Just my 2 cents....
