Sick of protein or just sick?
Hi everyone,
I am having a hell of a time this week. Nothing I eat seems to sit well with the grouchy pouch. My protein shakes are making me nauseous and everytime I eat solid proteins (lunch meat, cottage cheese, egg, cheese), it feels "stuck" for several hours after eating. Chicken is absolutely not going down well at all, but no vomiting, just nauseous.
I was able to eat the insides of 1/2 baked potato with no problem, but not anything else. I am fatigued too.
What do you all think?
Maybe a flu bug? Or just going through a picky pouch stage?
I am afraid to eat!
Thanks in advance...
Denise
Denise,
I am experiencing some of the same symptoms. I really don't want to eat because I am feeling pretty nauseous....I am not having the adverse reaction to proteins that you are, though. I don't know what to tell you about that...maybe you should get away from them for a day or two and see if that helps.
I cannot stand the protein shakes they are just way too sweet. I did buy some protein bars today...hopefully they will be easier.
I hope that you find your way through this "phase" of your recovery...

Are you taking anything like Prilosec or Nexium? I'm guessing you're fatigued because you're not getting in enough protein, but the fact that even protein shakes are making you nauseated, it doesn't necessarily sound like a stricture (esp since you ate the baked potato)- but perhaps some form of indigestion.
Have you tried pudding? Or perhaps egg drop soup? Both are 'smoother' than the protein you've been trying, and you can get pudding sweetened with splenda or listed as "no sugar added" so it won't be as sweet as the protein shakes.

Hi Denise,
I can totally relate. I had surgery on 9/1 and everything makes me nauseous also. I can eat frenxh style green beans, mashed potatoes(1 tbls) and tilapia. As far as protein, I can't use any with dairy. I use Unjury in Tropicana sugar free Juice. It is sweetend with splenda and it is delicious. It comes in a can just like soda.
I think about the 3 or 4 th week a lot of go thru these same symptoms.
Good Luck.

Hi Denise,
I'm sorry you are having problems My nutritionist recommends going back to your previous eating stage for a few days if I start having problems. Maybe go back to full liquids or clear for 2-3 days and give your pouch a break? Call your nutritionist and see what they recommend.
I can eat anything and not have it hurt my pouch unless I eat too fast or not chew enough. I only eat canned meat right now though, or meat in soups (I love the Healthy Choice soups) so they are really moist meats, but your having problems with cottage cheese too, so IDK.....I sometimes wish I had problems with some food as sad as that is.

Thanks for all the advise everyone! I am taking an antacid today and drinking more fluids in hope that it subsides. You all had excellent suggestions. I go in to my primary care doc today and will have results from my labs, so I will let you know if I am anemic or anything. Again, thank you for your suggestions and support!

I had surgery 9/19 and last week I couldn't get anything down that I was eating previously. I'd eat cottage cheese and it'd get stuck and the pain in your chest is excrutiating until it comes back up. I went to the dr and knew I had a stricture. My surgeon does them outpatient procedure so just went to the hospital that night, they did a scope, stretched the stricture and I went home. The procedure only takes 30 minutes if that. I can't get tuna, eggs or chicken down either. I do lima beans, soups, chili, etc. The only protein drink I can handle is Nectar Fuzzy Navel with Orange Crystal light. Oh, and the Protidiet grape but only 15 g of protein. I miss real food but I know the sacrifice will be worth it!
