Nausea....

My mother had the same surgery the same day that I did with the same Doctor. She has been having nausea and vomiting ever since. They put her on some suppositories to stop it and that worked for a few days but now even those are not working. She called the Dr. office this morning and they told her it is just a part of the surgery and that is how it affects some people. OK... but she can hardly leave the house for fear that she is going to vomit, she never knows when it is going to hit her. Anyone else have this same problem? How long does it last? Is there anyway to help this from happening all the time?

Hi Anne-Marie, I'm sorry that your Mom is having a hard time. Is she still on pain meds? The morphine made me SO nauseaus in the hospital that they had to change me to something different. And, is she using Whey based protein drinks? Is she still on the liquid stage? Is she drinking regular milk? She may have an allergy to the Whey and may have to change to a soy based protein... And, she may have become lactose intolerant since surgery and should use Lactaid milk for a bit. Tell her to take little sips...tiny, tiny sips...and keep sip, sip, sipping. Regular water from the tap makes me nauseaus...I have to drink bottled water. My surgeon told me the different ph's in the waters can cause the staple line to burn and make us nauseaus. I've also found that drinking bouillion is soothing to me. I add a scoop of my unflavored protein powder to it and I have a 20 gm protein soothing drink. Tell her that I'm sending thoughts and prayers her way. paula

Anne-Marie, She needs to get in and talk with her surgeon. When nausea makes it so that she can not leave the house then he needs to be aware of that. Is she able to keep fluids down? If not there is the chance that she is dehydrated. Dehydration can cause nausea. If she can keep down clear liquids, try some ginger tea.... ginger can help nausea. Keep calling that doc's office, remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease. I am sorry that she is having to go through this. Debbie

She has called the surgeon several times and they just say - this happens to some people. They have checked her for blockage but everything is fine. As of yesterday, they told her they would change her med and to stay away from milks and to use Lactaid if she needs milk in something. So we shall see if that helps her. I also told her that sometimes my stomach starts to feel queasy and if I have some gum, then that takes the yucky taste in my mouth away and the queasy goes away. So she is tryng that too. We went to our 1st support group meeting (post-surgery) last night & they told her to drink flat ginger-ale and try to eat sugar-free ginger snaps. So we will wait a few days and go from there. Thank you to you all for your support and help! Anne-Marie
