This is where it gets complicated. Some programs send people home with permission to eat cottage cheese, yogurt, etc. right away. My program keeps me on SF jello, FF broth, and protein shakes ( liquid diet ) for the 1st 2 weeks post-op. Then, we meet with the nutritionist again, and she puts us on the Stage III diet. This includes fish, shrimp, cottage cheese, mozzarella, yogurt, tofu, ground turkey, ground chicken, NO BEEF. NO BREADS. NO FRUITS or VEGGIES. NO CAFFEINE ( still ). Caffeine can cause ulcers!
We stay on this 100% protein diet for 2 more months. Then, we add fruits & veggies back in. Everything is gradual. This is a good thing.
No carbs means more weight loss. And, more importantly, eventually, we'll be able to consume enough protein, that we can wein ourselves off of the protein shakes. Chicken breast, pork, beef, etc. should wait several months, as they are more dense, and harder to digest.
Obviously, your tummy didn't mind too much, because you didn't dump.
However, it is always best to follow the diet prescribed by your surgeon.
Best wishes,
Kym from NH
Open surgery diets are different from Lap surgery.
Open surgery diets start purees at the hospital. I was shocked. I didnt want to eat that stuff. They told me it was my diet. On the 3rd day I was eating jello and yogart. I am still on the stage 2 diet. All doctors are different... I am not eating over 600 calories a day. My hunger is going away. I keep full on fluids and proteins and (4) 2-3 ounces of food a day. I am dowm 28 pounds in 3 weeks. I feel this diet and surgery is going to work for me. I stopped worrying. I know i am doing all I can. I feel better. I havent dumped. I am walking 1-1/2 miles a day. with a bad heart. That is a plus. I think I am going to do wonderful on this surgery.
I feel like i have made the best decission of my life.
Take care

Hi Michelle:
I had my surgery on Sept. 27. I think that you should talk to your nutritionist or surgeon regarding where you are with your eating. Every surgeon is different. I am eating pretty much anything right now (of course all high protien - cottage cheese, chicken breast, chicken salad, eggs (I hate them), protien drinks, protien bars, small bites of an apple (chew, chew, chew), tuna salad, string cheese, sugar free jello and pudding, low sugar yogurt, imitation crab, etc. Mostly soft foods. My surgeon is aware of this and says I am doing great. I have had no vomitting and no dumping as of yet. I do wish my weight lose was more but I am following his guide lines and he thinks I am doing well. I am off 5 out of 12 of my medications in just 2 weeks so I am focusing on that instead of being dissapointed about my weight loss. I hope you find an answer to your question and remember that we all have different guidelines to follow per our surgeons and we all will react differently to the surgery.
20 pounds in 2 weeks is awsome! Congratulations!!
Take care and keep us posted.
