Hi, I had the surgery LAP RNY on Sept 16 and had all drains and stuff removed prior to leaving the hospital. Stiches and staples out 10 days post surgery and first appointment with surgeon not for 30 days. I would love to hear from everyone their experience as I keep reading that folks leave the hospital with drains and stuff???

I never even had a drain. My surgeon said I didn't need it. I got my staples removed 1 week post op and my next appt is for 4 weeks after my surgery (So Oct 11th).

I was surprised I never had any drains either. I was expecting 2 drains. I guess they do not do that on open surgery. My insision was glued together. Remarkable healing Take Care Barb

Hi I had my surgery on the 27, and the drain was out when I left the hospital. My surgen actually appoligizes that he puts one in for all his surgerys. He said that this is they way he learned. My first post op is one week later. (this coming tuesday). I was surprised to see how many people still have theres in. It was so uncomfortable I am glad it is out.

Man I wish. I had a JP tube that was basically a suction near my new pouch. That was removed 1 week post op I also have a g-tube insterted into my old stomach. The main reason, or what they keep telling me is for nutrition. In case I wasn't getting my fluids or protien then just shot it down the tube into my tummy. They also said that it's a blow off valve for sleep apena patients. I have to hook up everynight to this drainage bag every night. It's quite painful at times. Like today it hurts. I get that one out tuesday. Other surgeons in his office, keep it in for 3 weeks.

I had open RNY on 9/13. I had a JP tube in until the day that I went home and then I had another drain until my 1 week (which was actually 2 weeks after surgery b/c I had a few complications)checkup. I personally think that the drains hurt worse that the incision. I had staples inside and steri-strips on the outside. It didn't necesarily hurt when he took it out, just both areas were/are really sensitive. And I think that I irritated the one that stayed in longer because I kept getting the string that held the cap on it stuck on things.

I had a lap RNY on the 20th - had a JP drain for the first week post op. I was very thankful when that thing got pulled! Otherwise I just have internal stitches and had steri strips. The steri strips have been off for a couple of days and everything looks great so far. Amy

HI, I had my surgery 9/12/05 and was released from the hospital in the am on 9/14/05. I still had my JP drainage tube in and it was taken out on my 1 week visit. I dont have any staples just steri strips over my 4 incisions and then the incision where the JP tube came out just a band aid. It's weird how doctors are so different in there procedures. I hear some people are eating puree'd ffods before they leave the hospital! Krista

I had 2 drains and staples removed 1 week post-op, they were not painful at all, just sort of in the way. Biggest hassle was allergic reaction to the tape used to put dressings around the drains, I ended up with blisters and intense itching...may they thought I was kidding when I told them I was allergic in my pre-op interview?!
