FREAKING OUT!
4 days to go and I'm starting to freak out...
I just realized my doctor never gave me a list of foods to eat after the surgery,,,, I guess he'll explain everything in the hospital..
he hasnt said anything about a diet,, and I forgot to ask.. I was going to go food shopping today to get ready for after the surgery,, but I realized i dont know what to get!!
My doctor has me on mushy food the first 30 days after surgery. If I feel that the mushies are too much or am getting nauseous I go back to liquids. Everyone is different though. Did you have an appointment with the nutritionist? The nutritionist is the one that usually goes over your eating program with you.

Maria,
Hang in there. My dr had me on liquids for the first week (strained soups, ensure, lots of water, find a protein shake u like also). After that I could start pureed foods for a week or 2 then move to normal foods. I am currently getting in about 60 grams of protein a day and am trying to limit my carbs to about 35 or so. I stocked up on Ensure and would have 3 of those per day in addition to my protein shake.
Hope this helps. You are going to do fine.

My doc had me meet with the dietician before the surgery, and this was what she said:
I need to have 3 meals a day (1 ounce of protein, to gradually be increased), plus two protein supplements of at least 15g each. That will get me in the 75-80g range for protein. I have two chewable vitamins and 6 calcium tablets a day to help with the malabsorption.
The day after surgery, I was allowed clear liquids (broth, jello, Crystal lite, water, etc.) Second day after surgery, they moved me to soft foods (cottage cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs, enriched cream of wheat). I am now on what they call stage three. I can have soft moist proteins (so this adds some poached chicken or fish to the mix.) Once I finish my ounce of protein, if I have space, I can have a few veggies (two days ago, I had a teaspoon of corn and lima beans). All fruits and veggies have to be cooked WELL, i.e. mushy, and they have to come after the protein.
I have also been able to handle 1-2 rice crisps with my cottage cheese (they are on the asian food aisle at the store), just so there was some chewing.
One month out, they will likely put me on stage 4, whi*****ludes raw fruits and veggies. I can't wait to have something a little more chew-intensive.
I have found that I like the protein supplements from Smart Forme (smartforme.com). The cold drinks (grape, wild berry passion, and grapefruit) just mix with water and give 15g of protein. I also like their shake-puddings, though it wasn't thick enough to be pudding as far as I am concerned. They also give 15 grams. I haven't tried their chili or hot drinks yet, as it is in the 90s here.
I would stock up on Crystal lite, broth (fat-free) and one or two Blue Bunny yogurts. Remember, that only eating an ounce at a meal, it will take a while to go through some of the stuff you buy. Don't buy so much that it will spoil before you can eat it.
